Dragons Comeback Late to defeat Howell 5-4...Rebels Then Rebound and Beat Midd North

In advance, I’d like to apologize in advance for this taking so long, but I’ve had Midterms/Funeral to attend............Not my best work, but here ya go!

Just three days after defeating Freehold Township 5-2, the Rebels faced off against the #11 ranked Brick Dragons in front of 500+ spectators. In the last month, the Rebels have fallen from 15 to 28 in the state rankings. The message was clear from Coach Daley, perform or else the odds of getting a high seed in Shore/States will be very difficult.

The Rebels took a first period lead when Mike Leiro jammed home a rebound. Senior captain Eddie Pyskaty would add to that lead about 3 minutes later, putting the Rebels up Two-Nothing. Unfortunately the Rebels collapsed off the in-suing face-off as Tyler Martin scored on a breakaway.Momentum defiantly shifted at that point as Brick would later tie the game. After two hard hitting, emotion filled, high energy periods the scoreboard was knotted at two.

The third period presented joyful cheers, then disappointing heartbreak. Howell took the lead from a power play goal from Mike Kochenash. Brick would tie the game again, but Eddie Pyskaty would put the Rebels in the lead with a great individual effort. With 5 minutes left former Howell native Matt Gumina would pull the Dragons even with a beautiful backhand goal. The next four minutes, the two teams traded odd men chances, a few posts, but unfortunately Bricks senior defenseman Pat Kearns capitalized on a 2 on 1 rush with 50 seconds left to seal the Dragons victory.

This was another tough loss for Howell but yet again they proved they can skate with anyone in the state of NJ.

1) Eddie Pyskaty - The Senior Captain had 4 points and drew 1-2 penalties, he truly showed why he is a top 15 player in the state. It was amazing to see Eddie “lead by example” Tuesday night.
2) Matt Kotch - Very crafty/shifty with the puck, nice to have a calm presence on the ice for the Rebs.
3) Mike Leiro/Mike Kochenash - Both had a few points, but the real show was #77.

Good for the Rebels, the disappointment of losing to Brick only lingered a few days as they suited up against A-North opponent Middletown North.

This game was honestly brutal, the game was played on the free skate rink (white rink), the fans didn’t want to be there, and it seemed like the team didn’t want to be there as well as they BARELY slid past MN 5-4.

Wednesday - Defending State Champs, Toms River South @ TR @ 6

Howell Defeats TRN 6-0. Also, Howell Hockey Blog Explores the Top Players/Games Around NJ

In front of a whopping crowd of 57, the Rebels ended there losing streak at two and defeated the Toms River North Mariners 6-0. Coach Bill Daley gave Junior Goaltender Zack Peras a break and started fellow Junior James Bodeker, the decision payed off. Bodeker del

ivered a 16 save shutout, his first in high school.

Leading the way for Howell was Pyskaty (2G), Kochenash (2G), Leiro (1G), Yaegal (1G).

Next for Howell is rival school Freehold Township on Saturday January 22nd @ 630.

Congratulations to........

James Bodeker on his first career shutout, James’ thoughts - “It was nice to be in net and get a chance to show what I can do for the team, a shutout is always a goalies dream.”

Brandon Yaegal on his first career goal, Brandon’s thoughts - “It was good, I’m glad I can help the team win, espicially scoring on a penalty kill, always a cool way to score.”

Since the Howell/TRN game was sort of a dud, I couldn’t post a 1 ½ paragraph blog entry just about that, so I decided to take a look around NJ about some of the best players/teams in the state of NJog entry, so I decided to focus on an Around NJ segment.

I hope to attend two or three of these games, if I do, I will write a little blog about them. The game I’m most excited about is Midd South/RBC, great skill is displayed in this game, and I’m excited to see RBC play, Howell’s future opponent on Feb 15th.

Just for fun...Score predictions
Midd South 3 - RBC 2, Crispy shuts the door, espicially in the 3rd when RBC frantically tries to tie the game.

CBA 2 - Bergen Catholic 0, CBA starts to find a groove, Colts get goals from Rivera and Clifton.

Brick 5 - Red Bank Catholic 5, Both teams explode offensively, Gumina has a big day for Brick and as does Powell for RBC.

Delbarton 4 - CBA 1, Delbarton shows why there the best team in the state of NJ, defense is led by draft prospect Matt Killian.

Howell 6 - Freehold Township 0, Howell’s offense is too much for Townships defense, Roy keeps the Patriots in the game for awhile though. Bodeker recieves another shutout, his second in two starts.

3) Anthony Sidiero, St. Augustine, FWD, #18, Freshman, Southern New Jersey native, rumors swirling around that this could be sent to Shaddocks Saint Mary’s. Notable Alumni - Crosby, Parise, Jack Johnson, Jonathan Toews. Pretty elite company.

Just days after getting embarrassed by SJV, your 2010-2011 Howell Rebels face off against #19 Red Bank Catholic looking to break out of their recent struggles.

What we know about RBC: “Tough customer”, very comparable roster to Howell, tough top two lines, then depth becomes an issue.. The Caseys’ were led by Howell Native Matt Armenti, but unfortunately for him, he suffered a fractured back, thus ending his season and his high school hockey career. With the loss of Armenti, it’s time for the other two Howell residents to provide scoring. Senior Mark Powell and offensive defenseman Jesse Deatherage regularly light the lamp for the Casey’s, but will have to pick it up even more so now in Armenti’s absence. Other notables for the Casey’s are speedster Pat Dwyer and four year starter in net, Gavin Gatta.

There is no doubt that this game will be a huge test for the Rebels, a telling one, that in the grand scheme of things, this match could be the pivotal game in this season, that will show what this team is truly capable of.

Recently I was fortunate to be able to sit down with "Calder" or Rookie of the Year Candidate Trevor Heuser. Heres the conversation we had............

MF: "First off congrats on a great first half of the year."

TH: "Thanks so much, I love playing."

MF: "What Middle School did you attend?"

TH: "Farmingdale."

MF: "Favorite NHL team? Favorite player?"

TH: "New Jersey Devils, and PK Subban."

MF: "Now lets get back to Howell Hockey, what is the one thing you learned from the upper classmen?

TH: "Leadership."

MF: "Who is the prankster of the team?"

TH: "Zack Peras."

MF: "Whats your opinion on the fans?"

TH: "Very supportive, energetic, just keep up the numbers!"

MF: "Favorite Chant?"

TH: "R-E-B-S REBS REBS REBS!"

MF: "Biggest game you have circled on your calender for the rest of the year?"

TH: "RBC."

MF: "Your opinion on Tuesdays 6-3 loss against the defending state champions Toms River South?"

TH: "I thought we out played them in most aspects of the game but even though we out shot them, we need to get higher quality shots and mostly get to the net for rebounds. We lose and win as a team."

MF: "There's alot of speculation you 'Lead by Example', thoughts?"

TH: "(Laughs) I just play my game, and try to just worry how I play and perform."

MF: "How would you grade your your play so far?"

TH: "I think I have played good, but there is always something I can do better and improve on?"

MF: "The teams play?"

TH: "I think that we all need to play our game and play our role and correct a few things to get back on track."

MF: "Thanks for the time Trev, keep leading by example."

Howell Falls to Defending State Champions 6-3

With heavy hearts the Howell Rebels took the ice Tuesday night against defending state champions Toms River South. In what was expected to be a tight defensive game, these two teams had just that in the first period, as it ended with a scoreless 0-0 tie. Kochenash started the scoring mid way through the second but Toms River quickly answered with two of there own goals, both directly off of sloppy defensive play by the Rebels. At the end of two Toms River South led 2-1. The start of the third showed the level talent in this game. Pyskaty quickly tied the score with a snipe through Pet Kerry’s five hole. Unfortunately for Rebels fans, TRS’s top forwards, Jay Malone and Todd Unger showed exactly why they are considered some of the best players in the state. They both capitalized on each chance they got, equating to a 5-3 lead for Toms River going into the final minute. Jay Malone put in an empty netter to complete his hat trick and placing the final stamp on a 6-3 win for Toms River South.

Well Rebels, if you want respect you need to start winning big games. So far, Howell has failed to deliver in games versus top ranked schools such as Middletown South(2-1 loss) and Toms River South(6-3 Loss). Lucky for Howell, they will get another chance to prove themselves against elite competition on Tuesday when they take on #12 Red Bank Catholic at the Armory(8:15 P.M.).

Those who know the sport best will tell you that hockey has a certain rhythm to it. Every shift, every game, and every season is inevitably packed with ebbs and flows. Teams are never as bad as they appear during there lowest points, and never as good as they seem during there highest ones. The very best clubs then must be not just talented, but resilient. Not just hungry, but focused. Their sport demands it. Over the next 3 months, the Rebels face off 15+ more times. Through utter dominance, and frustrating struggle, they are revealing the rhythms of a season, and the mysteries, wonders, and tortures of hockey. Get em’ going, Rebs.

High school hockey fans always love to debate, is this 3rd year Howell team “for real”? How good are they compared to the rest of NJ? Can they go deep in states? We will soon find out.

Three stars of the game
1) Mike Leiro - Leiro established dominance with the puck all game long against a tough TRS defense. He also sacrificed his body all game long with numerous blocked shots and big hits. Karma rewarded Leiro as he scored against the Indians.
2) Matt Morelli - “Matty Mo” once again had a stellar performance against a big opponent and his play is validating the ice time he is getting.
3) Mike Kochenash - MK33 is quietly leading the Rebels in goals with 15. The junior has relieved some of the scoring responsibility from Pyskaty and Leiro. He has been a threat to score every time he has the puck.

Fan of the Game: Greg McEvoy- Your dedication is truly appreciated by your follow fans. Your always enthusiastic and ready to chant, keep up the good work Greg.

Whats Next: Howell faces off against SJV on Saturday at Wall Gold Coast Arena (5:45 P.M).
After that Howell heads into Red Bank’s armory to take on private school and rival Red Bank Catholic.

MF: Keep the pedal down boys, if they score, don’t feel sorry for yourselves, get a quick answer. Have fun, fans are always behind you.
RF: Pretty much what Mark said. Just try and sustain momentum, and play with a little more intensity. When we have fallen behind, the team and fans seem dispirited, and we need to loosen up a bit.

Rebels Rebound, Defeat Wall 7-1

In the final game of there season series, the Rebels defeated the Wall Knights 7-1 with Goals from Leiro (2), Kochenash, DiPasquale, Crane, Hodes and Pyskaty. Howell also had very strong goaltending from the tandem of Peras/Bodeker.

Unsung hero(s): Brian George/Brandon Yaegal/Stephen Bernhardt
The Rebel’s third line does not get a lot of playing time, but against the weaker talent Daley rewards these three players by quality 5v5 time and some power-play time. Its tough not getting playing time, but when they step on the ice, they make the most of it. Keep up the good work boys.

2) Austin Crane - Very good with the puck against Wall, made his presence known early and ofter.

Howell Loses Heartbreaker to Midd South, Falls to 5-1-0 on the Season

Howell hockey fans were not disappointed with Tuesdays game vs Middletown South despite the disappointing 2-1 result. This prime-time match-up between two of the top five publics in New Jersey featured hitting, skill, goal-tending, and of course two great fan bases.

After trading chances in the first period but not finishing, Midd South started the scoring with a great goal by defenseman Jimmy Burns. The Eagles struck again to make it 2-0, but the Rebels would answer with ten seconds left in the second period on Mike Kochenash’s eleventh goal of the season.

The third period was full of wide open opportunities, three posts were hit, (two by Howell, one by Midd South), but the biggest factor in this game was the sensational play of the two goalies, Midd’s Chris “Crispy” Marsillo and Howell’s Zack Peras. Marsillo played great, accumulating three breakaway saves and several lightning-quick post to post saves, flashing his inner Roberto Luongo.

Unfortunately, Howell fell short 2-1, but were are a lot of positives that came out of this game:
-Howell played their heart out all night, worked for every loose puck, and never gave up on a play.
-Defense held its own against one of the best offenses in the state of New Jersey.
-Howell PROVED it could keep up with, if not outplay one of the best teams in the state. (they tied CBA 2-2).

Unsung hero: Brandon Hodes
Hodes played in all situations (PK, PP and 4 on 4) and proved why he deserves the captaincy. We here at the Howell hockey blog love blue collar hockey, Hodes was the epitome of that last night. Well Done.

1) Trevor Heuser- Heuser played great defense throughout, and for the most part, shut down Midd South’s high potent offense. Hueser has been impressing EVERYONE this far into the season.
2) Zack Peras- Kept the Rebels in the game for the most part, played well.
3) Mike Kochenash-Put Howell back in the game with a snipe as time was ticking down on the 2nd period.

In an unanimous decision, the “fan” of the game, goes to the entire fanbase.There were a lot of great fans there last night, twenty or so tailgaters, seniors home from college, kids missing work to come. Awesome chants, and awesome tailgate everyone.

Whats Next For Howell?
After tonight’s rematch with Wall, Howell plays in the “Bridgewater Holiday Tournament” from December 26th to December 30th. Shorty after that comes the highly anticipated match between Howell and the defending public state champions, Toms River South. This game should be another great test for Howell, as TRS has regressed a bit since their championship win, but regardless, it should be a good game.

Game of the year? Maybe...

Hostility, hate and intensity are the only words that come to mind when thinking about Tuesday’s prime-time match up of Middletown South (#1 Public) vs Howell (#4 Public).

Get to know the teams

Middletown South Eagles
The number one ranked public school in the state enters this game with a tie against CBA, two wins over Mondon and a mercy against SJV. The Eagles are lead by senior Defensemen Chris Malamut, forward Matt Johnson, Brett Johnson, and junior Zach England. The Eagles are considered the best public school in the state because of a strong top six defensive core of Malamut, Burns, Littenberg, Ditzel, Himmelberg and Nielsen. Midd South’s best weapon is in net, Chris Marsillo. The man they call “Crispy” is having a sensational year so far in net. In there first four games (3-0-1) the Eagles have outscored their opponents 28-2.

Your Howell Rebels
The fourth ranked public school in the state enters the game with quality wins over Jackson, Wall, Toms River North, SJV and a blowout victory over Mondon. Howell’s production (as expected) has come entirely from their top six forwards and top 4 defenseman. The line of Leiro/Pyskaty/Kochenash has produced the majority of Howell’s goals, Gerbasi/Hodes/Crane has produced their fair share of points as well. The defense for Howell has been shaky at times, but they have been bailed out by the sensational play of juniors Zack Peras and James Bodeker.

3 Keys to the game

1) Quick start, Howell will have a tough time playing from behind. There is no margin for error playing tied or in the lead.
2) Utilizing the 3rd D-Pairing and 3rd line. Howell can not roll 2 defensive pairings and 2 lines the whole game, by the 3rd period they will be extremely tired.
3) Top 3 production, Pyskaty needs to lead by example. How so? Scoring goals, big hits and smart decisions, Kochenash/Leiro need to do the same.

I recently got the chance to sit down with Junior Defensemen Matt Kotch to talk about his outstanding play so far this season and his Rebel teammates. Enjoy.

MF – “We all know the team is doing well, but how do you feel about your play 5 games into the season?”

MK – “I feel like I haven’t been playing to my potential, I need to pick it up.”

MF- “What teammate of yours has impressed you the most so far?”

MK – “Mike Kochenash has been moving the puck real well, moving his feet, making the plays and scoring the goals.”

MF – “How would you grade the fans so far? Whats your favorite chant at the games?”

MK – “The fans are same of the best we’ve ever had, really vocal and loud. My favorite chant is R-E-B-S REBS REBS REBS!”

MF – “Do you have a pregame ritual? Are you superstitious?”

MK – “Um, pregame ritual, I really am not superstitious, who needs superstitions?”

MF – “If the hockey team had a Christmas party, who shows up in the ugliest sweater? Who’s the best dancer? And who shows up one hour late?”

MK – “(Laughs)…It quite obvious Buckley is the best dancer. Ugliest Christmas sweater, Im gonna say Crane, if he wears one, and Eddie or Leiro shows up late.”

MF – “Thanks and good luck.”

MK – “Thanks, keep up the fan base.”

First off, apologies about this taking so long. We have both been very busy with school and work, so it took us a while to sit down and get this done.

Chants of, “Who’s the joke now?” rang from the Howell fans when the Rebels defeated rival Jackson Memorial on Wednesday night. The score might have only been 5-1, but the Rebels dominated play throughout the game but ran into a hot goalie. Leiro started the scoring with a beautiful wrist shot from an awesome pass from who else, Eddie Pyskaty. After that, followed four consecutive Rebel goals from Leiro again, Pyskaty, Frankie Gerbasi, and Mike Kochenash.
Defensively, Howell played solid, they limited Jackson to under 20 shots, only allowing one goal. The Rebels were without Kotch so once again Hueser, Morelli, Schiek and Glover were up to the task and stepped up big.
In between the pipes Zack Peras played another good game, made very nice post to post saves, and ate up rebounds all game long. For numbers people, his goals against so far is 0.66……Pretty impressive for the third year goaltender.

Unsung hero: John Glover.
Glover was asked to step into the 2nd defensive pairing due to kotch’s absence and played great. He made several nice passes and made the “smart play” every time he was on the ice. Very nice to see.

2) Mike Leiro – A two goal night, I remember our panel saying he was going to have a good game against Jackson….+1 for Howell Hockey Blog! Also, congrats to Leiro for scoring his 100th career point.
3) Frankie Gerbasi – Scored his first goal in his young high school career. Hopefully Gerbasi can get things going, if he does, Howell’s already balanced offense could be much more potent.

Whats Next For Howell?
On Tuesday December 14th, Howell will be squaring off vs Wall at Gold Coast Arena. There is a known rivalry between the Rebels and the Knights that dates back to the Dowd Cup final in 08, where the Rebels defeated Wall to take the conference. This looks to be a good game, and a good test for the Rebels.

Howell Impresses Their Way Through Early Season Play

Despite the growing success for the 2010 Howell Rebels, it must be understood that those games were expected victories.

After two years of not earning too much respect, Howell has rolled through their first three games with relative ease, but that is something that was expected, both from the fan-base all the way through to the bench.

Head coach Bill Daley, in his third year and pushing his 40th career win, demands as close to perfection as he can achieve from a team of this talent level.

For the first time in the three years, this Rebels' team has proven to be deeper than any team in the past and has the skill on defense that they've never had, previously, as well.

Besides Kevin Gaskill, who graduated in 2009, Daley has played forwards such as Eddie Pyskaty on the blue-line, just for some skill back there. Now, with freshman Trevor Hueser busting big on the varsity scene, there's no reason for something like that--making Howell's offensive attack that much more balanced.

With a first line of Mike Liero, Pyskaty and Michael Kochenash--each of which has scored a goal in each game and has at least 8 points so far in the season--there's really no telling in how far Howell will go.

While Daley is extremely impressed with the way the first line has performed in every phase of the game, he can't help but notice the positive play from third-liners, Frankie Gerbasi in particular. The freshman has displayed terrific hockey sense, and scored his first career goal on Wednesday night, looking strong throughout the game.

Jon Glover and Matt Morelli have looked good as well on defense, complimenting Hueser well.

In net, three-year starter Zack Peras has turned away 31 of 33 shots, with three wins and a shutout, something that has become almost expected of the junior goaltender.

Coming up, Howell will take on Wall in a rivalry that has turned many pages in the short two years they have played each other. Since the Rebels' rallied to win the Dowd Cup two years ago, Wall has been out to get Howell. Last season, Brandon Hodes scored the game-winning goal in the final minutes as the boys in blue took the game 2-1. Look for a game filled with hard hits as Wall head coach Mike Dianora isn't all too fond of the Rebels.

It's going to be tough, but no one wants to look past Wall and towards Middletown South. Probably the game of the year against arguably two of the top Shore Conference teams, that battle will be fun to watch on Dec. 21. For now, however, the Rebels have enough on their plate as they go from mediocre to one of the best publics in the state.

Howell Improves to 2-0 on the Season With a 12-1 Win Over Mon Don.

Game Summary
In a game where Howell completely dominated in all aspects, many players stepped up and contributed out of their roles. After early domination by the 1st and 2nd lines, coach Daley elected to giving the 3rd line of Bernhardt-Aienna-Yaegal, some rare ice time and the line responded. Bernhardt played a great game and scored his first varsity goal of the season, while Aienna and Yaegal both had good games and generated some chances. Back to the top 2 lines, Eddy Pyskaty played another great game, and looked unstoppable out there, while Mike Kochenash added a goal, and Mike Leiro had a big game scoring 3 goals.

On the back end, there wasn’t much work to be done defensively, as the Rebels maintained such high offensive pressure. Other than a few minor chances, it was a great game by the rebels defense, minus the one Mon Don goal, which came off of a broken play which left a Mon Don forward wide open in front of the net for an easy tap in past a sprawling Peras. Matt Morelli and Trevor Heuser both played strong games, with Morelli scoring his first two goals of the season, and playing great defense, and Heuser played well defensively, shutting down any of Mon Don’s rushes. Matt Kotch and Matt Schiek played well, and John Glover and Billy Montague got some playing time as well.

In net, there wasnt much work to be done, as the Mon Don offense could only muster 2 shots, Peras faced one shot, and let in one goal, in a period of action, and Bodeker made one save on a deflection, playing the entire second period.

Unsung hero - Matt Schiek.
Schiek wracked up a good amount of minutes and made his presences known by big hits, timely pinches and a few good shots to the net. If Howell can get Schiek going, as well as Morelli/Glover, look for the Rebels to jump into the top 25 of the NJ state rankings.

1) Eddie Pyskaty – Absolutely Dominated the ice, rarely lost the puck, and had what, 3 goals……. As we said last time, get used to seeing Eddie on here.
2) Mike Leiro – 3 Goals on the night, awesome wrist shot, look for him to have a big night against Jackson tomorrow!
3) Tie- Brandon Hodes/Matt Morelli – Hodes had a solid night, he picked up his first goal of the season, played well on the PK and back checked hard all game long. Matt Morelli picked up 2 goals and played awesome defense. Morelli is making a strong case to be the #1 defenseman for Howell.

Whats next for Howell: The Rebels take on #26 ranked Jackson Memorial at Toms River on Wednesday December 8th, at 730. This game is huge for the Rebels, and is quite arguably their first big test of the year. There is a lot of bad blood in this game. In addition to being rival towns, Jackson’s head coach Peter Morris has been known for his hatred of Howell. Last year he told several people that Howell’s program is a joke, as is Brian Deakyne and the Howell Hockey Blog. Just a note, after he said that, Howell DEFEATED Jackson 3-1 in the Shore Conference Tournament last winter.

Will coach Morris eat his words again? Lets hope so.

Season Opener a Success, Howell Defeats Toms River North 7-0

The 30th state ranked Howell Rebels made a statement to New Jersey as they EMBARRASSED the Toms River North Mariners in shutout fashion 7-0.

Headlining the score-sheet were forwards Mike Kochenash (3G, 1A) and Eddie Pyskaty (2G, 3A) who was electrifying every time he touched the puck. Other standouts were goaltender Zack Peras who recorded his first shutout of the season, and freshman defenseman Trevor Heuser (1G) who scored his first goal of his high school career on a blast from the point and played solid defense all night.

Grades
Offense - A+: Great cycling, passing, shooting, domination, and of course 7 goals for is huge for an opener. Howell’s offense SHOULD NOT be a problem all year, especially when Greg Buckley enters Howell line-up after his 30 day suspension due to transfer.

Defense - B+: Great breakouts, lots of blocked shots and big hits. Only improvement that needs to be made is a cut-down on breakaways, Peras did save 2-3 breakaways. The way we see it is those breakaways will be cut down by seasons end, just gotta get the D some more chemistry.

Goaltending - A+: Peras was very solid making 16 saves on 16 shots for a shutout. A shutout is great for a goalies confidence, especially to start the season.

Coaching - A: Very good to see the top 2 lines getting some confidence and chemistry with each other. The 3rd line wasn’t used very much, but obviously Coach Daley instilled the Defense first mentality to his 3rd liners, and it showed off, very good to have a 3rd line who will focus on defense.

A lot of times when watching hockey, fans only notice the players who put up the points. We would like everyone to notice the “Unsung heroes”.

Matt Morelli epitomized the definition of an “Unsung hero” last night. Morelli did not have any points, but did do a lot of dirty work, worked hard in the corners, blocked shots, and threw his body around all night long.

Improvements: The fans. Howell High School is a school of 2,500 students, there were 15-20 kids chanting on Wednesday night. “The Rebellion” is known as of the best fan bases in all of New Jersey............Please tell me where everyone was for the season opener last night? The class of 2010 prided themselves on going to every game, regardless of location, and I think a lot of other students should continue the tradition.

3 Stars of the Game:
1) Mike Kochenash – Opening night hat-trick, good start to the season for Kochenash. If the Rebels look to go far this year, Kochenash has to be a huge part of the success.
2) Zack Peras – Even though the final score was 7-0, Peras had to make 2-3 breakaway saves. Ideal start to the season for the Rebels net-minder.
3) Eddie Pyskaty – Made his presence felt every time he stepped on the ice. 2 goals and a couple assists is a great starting point for the Senior captain. Get used to seeing Pyskaty in the three stars.

It's that time of year again, and you know what that means; Rebels Hockey! That's right, and after a disappointing defeat in the quarter-finals, Howell will be looking to come out bigger and better than previous seasons. Going into only its third year, this hockey team has done things that take other schools years upon years to accomplish. Having already surprised the Shore Conference by winning the Dowd Cup in their first year with the program, and falling short last season in the chance to win another, this team has gone above and beyond the expectations. Some felt that the winning of the Dowd Cup was just due to the "dream season" that the team had in 2008-2009, but that was soon to be proved wrong.

In previous ‘Season Previews’, Howell fans were used to seeing the names of Dave Ramos, Nick Peras, Billy Acquaviva, and if you’re a true fan, Marc Moskowitz. Well Rebel fans, those days are over, and a new wave of talent from the classes of 2011, ‘12, ‘13, and even ‘14, will be wearing the Rebel crest; and I’m are positive they’ll do a damn good job. First off, the average fan must be asking, “Where’s Ramos? They’re going to be awful without him!”. Sure, it’s hard to replace a guy who has put up 130+ in two years as a Rebel, but with the depth this team has, it can surely be done. Score sheets have also become familiar with the names Hodes, Pyskaty, Leiro and Kotch. It’s now time for Juniors Mike Kochenash, Matt Morelli, Steve Bernhardt and Brandon Yaegel to step up and start putting up points for the Rebels. Also looking to become a regular in the points column, is sophomore Austin Crane. Also gaining honorable mention is the defensive lineup for this year’s team. Although defense has never been a major problem, it has been noticed that it could use some work. The previous season average for goals for was 4, but the goals against was 3. This leaves only a one goal margin to work with, and that can be improved on. And don’t think to blame this all on the goal-tending either, because with the group of Zack Peras, going for his third straight year starting, backup James Bodeker, and upcoming backup Matt Bettinger, the group between the pipes seems to be just fine.

Enough talk about the veterans of Howell Hockey, let’s give a nice welcome to the new faces on the team!

All in all, this Rebel team looks to impress once again; but the road to a championship is going to be a long and winding one. Bill Daley, 35-9-5, and head coach of the team since programs’ beginning, obviously has another challenge in front of him with the leaving of players due to seniority. This won’t stop the players from playing at their highest level, however, it will show to be a roadblock that them and coach Daley will have to overcome. One player does not make a team, and some have trouble understanding this, but this team looks to prove this saying true and show all who doubt them that they will carry on strong.

“And so the critics shall be writing of another "dream season" this year, as this Howell team has the aspirations, the commitment, and the heart, to achieve this once again.”

State Playoffs, Round 3; 3) Randolph Rams 9, 11) Howell Rebels 0

Game Summary: For the final seven minutes and forty-two seconds at Mennan Arena, more than sixty miles from Howell, Sunday night, the 60-some Rebels' fans could not have been prouder of the 11th-seeded Howell hockey program.

In a third round match-up against a team that was flat-out better than Howell, the Rebels struggled in several ways in a 9-0 defeat. Still, there was two phases of the game that Randolph did not top Howell in: hustle and heart.

Against a team who was quicker, stronger, more talented, and simply, better, they did not out-hustle the Rebels. In previous games, many people called out Howell because a lack of effort, and hustle and heart.

No, not on this night.

A ten goal lead in a high school hockey game is ended short in a 'mercy.' At the 7:28 point of the third period, the Rebels gave up a goal, forcing them to be trailing by nine. Instead of giving in, they fought to the final whistle and did not give up, and did not allow another goal--forcing their dedicated fans to stay.

Rip Howell for not being prepared for this game, or simply not talented enough, but on this night, it's impossible to charge the Rebels with not trying, because they did that and more.

Summing it up: In a season that has been described much like a roller coaster, the Howell Rebels defied the odds in post-season play, much like the previous season. There were the great moments, and there were the ones that made the fans want to cringe, but in the end, there was nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it was the opposite as the buzzer rang at Mennan Arena. Every Rebels' fan was proud of what this team accomplished in just their second season, as it was a major improvement from the year before.

There was hostility.

There was love.

But, hey, that's what families are made of--and the relationship between the players and fans was nothing short of a family-type relationship.

Last season, when the Howell Rebels varsity ice hockey team surprised everyone in the Shore Conference by winning the Dowd Cup as a first-year team, everyone deemed the it a 'dream season'.

This year, the Rebels are amplifying that term by 10,000 decibels.

Despite falling short in the Dowd Cup (and falling short is an understatement), Howell, who is seeded 11th in the state tournament, has shockingly advanced to the third round, or quarterfinals of states, in this, their second season.

In a season that has witnessed Howell blow five third-period leads, suffer several season-ending injuries to key players, and saw the Rebels inability to win the division of conference tournament, a lurking state championship would feel that much better.

Let's face facts. In the remaining games that Howell will play (there's a maximum of three), the Rebels will not be favored, and all the teams they play won't consider them a true state-champion contender, starting with the third-seeded Rams from Randolph.

There is every reason to consider Howell a state champion contender.

Look, we all know that winning is, in reality, the result of having one thing: talent. In terms of individual talent, the two men who are responsible for Howell tying--and winning--Thursday night have as much talent that the Rebels will need. With nearly five minutes remaining in regulation to Pyskaty's overtime goal, he and Dave Ramos did not come off the ice--and for good reason. Everyone at Wall on that night knew that if Howell wanted to advance to the third round of the state playoffs, it would be because of them.

And it was.

Aside from talent, heart is essential to a championship-worthy team. Everyone on this team has it, along with everyone in the crowd. For the first time, we all truly witnessed Howell hockey representing an entire town, and it was evident that the town returned the favor, taking serious pride in the boys in blue and grey. As the Rebels took the ice, there was an emotion throughout the bleachers that made the game feel even more special than it already was--it made everyone feel as if we were guaranteed this wouldn't be the last game of the season for the 2009-2010 Howell Rebels.

When Howell takes the ice at Mennan Arena Sunday evening, nearly 60 miles from the rural, laid-back township of Howell, the pride that comes with wearing that Rebel on the front of the jersey will be back, and as every player looks up to the nearly 400 fans who made the treacherous trip, by car or bus, they'll understand it.

Surely, as Pyskaty flew up the wing, puck on stick, with just the goalie to beat, with the 700 fans in attendance collectively holding their breath, it was obvious.

There's a reason all of us are here, in this town, for this team, together: to win a state championship.

Game Recap

State Playoffs, Round 2; Final Score: 11) Howell Rebels 4, 6) Middletown South Eagles, 3 (overtime)

Game Summary: There are no words to captivate what would happen Thursday night in the second round match-up between the Howell Rebels and Middletown South Eagles.

With a little over twenty-seven seconds remaining, potentially in Howell's season, the Rebels made it their mission ot get to overtime. Dave Ramos would bury home a rebound with 27.7 seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game at three and sending the teams into overtime.

In the final period, the first one in Howell hockey history by the way, Ramos found defensemen Eddie Pyskaty flying down the wing and hit him with a pass. Pyskaty would out-skate the last defensemen for Middletown South and beat the Eagles goalie top shelf, thus scoring the game-winning goal in the sudden death extra period, just 2:57 in.

The game-winner was Pyskaty's second of the game. He also scored the first goal of the game, a similar situation in which he was alone with the goalie--that time he went back-hand.

All night, Middletown South hung with Howell, although Howell had the upper hand for most of the night. Pyskaty and Nick Peras, who scored a power play deflection goal gave Howell leads in the first and second periods.

In the first meeting, Middletown South came back in the third period to win 4-3.

Tonight, it was time to play role reversal.

Head coach Bill Daley supported his word following the seeding for states, stating that the second round would be 'comeback time'.

What went right: For Howell, in a game filled with emotion from both the players and fans, they did practically everything right. Controlling emotions in a game like this is hard. Controlling emotions against a team whose trying to pick fights after every play in the state playoffs is even harder. The Rebels were on top of their game tonight, with some great puck movement and big goals all night. Despite controlling the game, it was Howell who found themselves scrambling for that game-tying goal late in the game--of course they did it without breaking a sweat.

Well, that's not entirely true.

On a serious note, with their season on the line, Howell scored the big goals that would send them to the next round of the playoffs, and send the Eagles home--and that's what counts at the end of the day.

What's Next: On Sunday, the Howell Rebels will take on the defending state-champions: Randolph Rams at Mennen Arena. Certainly, Howell will play the role of underdog yet again, considering the Rams are the 3rd seed--but that seems to be what pushes Howell. This game has all the potential to be even better than tonight's epic duel, and, if they win, the 11th-seeded Howell Rebels will punch their ticket to the semi-finals of the state playoffs.

Was it Really Just a Loss?

On Thursday night at 7:00 PM Eastern Time, the Howell Rebels will face-off against Middletown South in the second round of the state playoffs.

Just those two teams in the same sentence together should make any typical fan cringe, nonetheless sitting together in the same section of the same bracket.

For those of you who can't remember, on January 30th, the Middletown South Eagles stormed back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Howell Rebels 4-3 at Gold Coast Arena. That game was so much more than a loss, however.

Whether it was the fact that my posts were 'too hard' on the players in assuming that they were out-of-shape after their fifth blown lead in the third period, or the fact that losses were just uncommon in Howell territory, there was certainly hostility in Rebel country.

While many feel it was a bad time for Howell, now, it's evident that it was better. In the wake of what was noted as the toughest time throughout the two years of Howell hockey, it's time to realize it was actually good.

Considering that this team had never gone through that much trouble--or any serious--adversity, there was no better time for them to start. The fans thought extremely highly of the players, and the favor was returned as the players were appreciative of the fans.

After that night, it all changed.

Fans would take up the same assumption that players didn't work for their success, and the players started to realize the fans were only there when they were good, when they were putting up banners.

Following that night--and several blizzards--the Rebels would be back in action, and finished off some unworthy opponents rather easily. In the Dowd Cup, they would be ousted heavily in the second round, as everyone is aware.

But now, over a month since that heart-breaking loss against the Eagles, it's time to observe: what did everyone learn?

Did the players learn to play how they feel they should and not listen to writers or fans?

Did the fans learn to support their team and not causing adversity, because, hey, that is my job?

But most importantly, did everyone learn that there is a reason why these teams will face-off in the second round of thew state playoffs, a place that the Rebels have never gone past?

Revenge.

That's what Howell is in for, and, in the end, a victory tomorrow night will make all the problems go away from players to fans and to everything else.

Winning solves everything.

One Game to Prove it All

It is hard to believe that my days with Howell High School Hockey are coming to an end. I remember like it was yesterday, watching the Rebels get embarrassed in their first ever game against Brick Memorial. And oh how far we have come since then.

34-8-5. What do those numbers mean to you? This was a team that was thrown together a couple months before the season started, and Howell hockey has been able to accomplish this staggering record over the past two seasons. It is amazing to say the absolute least and the great thing is, it's not over yet.

Monday night Howell embraced the challenge that I put out to them in my last post. In the state palyoff game vs the West Windsor Pirates, Howell put on a show, dazzling the fans and most importantly showing what means the most to me: heart. Coming off the heartbreaking loss in the shore conference semi-finals, Howell came out with a purpose and they refused to make this game their last. Young players always need leaders to look up to, an oh did these leaders step up. Captains Eddy Pyskaty and Dave Ramos played seemingly flawless, controlling play and accounting for 3 goals between the two. Probably the most impressive was the play alternate captain Nick Peras. In a career that has been defined by big-hits and penalties, Peras played like an all-around player, and truly changed this game. He constantly crashed the net and swarmed the puck, blocking shots that surely left a mark for the sake of a vicotry. And lets not forget, he also had his econd hat-trick of the season, getting the Rebels on the board early and often. All in all this was for sure one of the best games that Howell has played in awhile, and it happened at just the right time.

What's next for the Rebels can prove to be a game that can make their season a success. On thursday night they will face off against the winner of Jackson and Middletown South, most likely the Midd South Eagles. In their last game against Midd South, Howell blew a 3rd period lead and suffered one of their four losses on the year. This is the chance that every player has been looking for. The chance to knock off a top team and once again solydify Howell as a top team in the state. This could very well be the last game for the senior players and the fans. I know for a fact that the character of this team will show on thursday night. So seniors, how do you want to be remembered? Fifteen years down the road, how do you want to explain your last ever game to your kids? Whatever happens just do this one thing for me and for every fan that has come out to watch you for two years. Leave it all on the ice.

State Playoffs, Round 1; Final Score: 11) Howell Rebels 7, 22) West Windsor Plainsboro South Pirates 2'

Game Summary: WALL -- In a game that had all the potential to be their last, Rebels' seniors Nick Peras and Dave Ramos stole the show at Gold Coast Arena, Monday night.

Peras lead all scorers with a hat trick, his second of the season, scoring goals in each period and electrifying 'The Rebellion'.

Dave Ramos also scored twice along with Eddie Pyskaty who scored later in the third period. Rebels' goalie Zack Peras was magnificent throughout the game, allowing just two goals, and earning his second career state playoff victory.

What went right: For Howell in the first round of states, almost everything went right. The 11th-seeded Rebels came out on Monday night with a motive, scoring early and often, putting the game out of reach at the first intermission. Despite only having a two-goal lead, Howell's defense was superb with players blocking shots and terrific play from all the defensemen. On the offensive end, the Rebels were on the power play for the majority of the night and dominated on it--with two man-advantage goals. All three lines were effective throughout the night with goals being scored from each of them. Overall, Howell was a dominant, state-championship-esque team on this night.

What's Next: Nothing is set in stone in terms of who Howell will play, but many have their eye on the 6th-seeded Middletown South Eagles. In the only meeting this season, the Eagles stormed back with two straight goals to defeat the Rebels, despite Howell dominating throughout the game.

This time, however, things are different.

The Rebels fell short, as many know, in the Shore 'B/C' Dowd Cup, while Middletown South beat both Brick and Brick Memorial in their run through the Handchen Cup, the tournament between Shore 'A' teams. If these teams meet, as expected, it will take another terrific game from Howell to advance to the third round of states--a place they have never been before.

It's On Us

Let's make something straight: the 2008-2009 Howell Rebels are different from the 2009-2010 Howell Rebels.

There's a couple reasons to support that statement. It's not because last year's team was more talented--and they're not. At this point in the season, the record means nothing. Howell has achieved their goal of making it to the state playoffs.

It's not because this team doesn't have the 'chemistry' that last year's team had. All of these players have the ability to be prolific hockey players and goal-scorers.

Let me tell you why this team has a different feeling than last year's: the fans.

As much as you would wish to believe that the fans do not have an impact on the way a team plays, think again. Look at the other teams, not only in the division, but in the state. Aside from Freehold Township, who really only have fans because Howell does, high school hockey teams generally do not have fans. Trust me, I cover a multitude of hockey teams up north, none of which have fans--and it's a completely different game.

All of last season, the Rebels' fans gave them an edge, it gave them a swagger. Teams, quite frankly, did not want to play Howell because no matter where the game was, the fan-base was there--and they were loud.

Sadly, this year, things are different. The same twenty-to-thirty students are at every game, and are there for more of a social gathering--rather than cheering on their team.

Fans, young and old, starting Monday night, things will change. There will be several hundreds of fans supporting Howell. Certainly, that may be a little much to ask for, but not with the Howell crowd that I remember, the one that was at Ocean Ice Palace last year when the Rebels were eliminated from the state playoffs in the second round.

This team, is more than just a team. For several fans, Howell Hockey has become a way of life. It's certainly not just a team that I happen to write about.

No.

Howell hockey is something everybody in this town has come together for. Whether it be young or old, high school boys, high school girls, mothers, fathers, and grandparents a like--this is something we have all been able to come together and support together.

Let me ask you, in what may be my last day as a Howell Rebels fan because I am a senior, why not be there to support the very people who have given you an escape from the nasty world out there?

Because, oh yes, Howell hockey is so much more than a high school sport.

It's not just a game.

With support, this team has every chance to make a miracle run to the state championship. And there's no better way to celebrate something than with 400 people who love that something as much as you do.

For all of you reading this, that something is Howell Rebels Ice Hockey.

A Test of Character

Throughout the course of the short, yet truly exhilerating rookie and sophmore seasons for Howell High School Hockey, the Rebels have in essence not faced much controversy. Sure, there have been fans from other schools bashing Howell, and wanting nothing more than them to crash and burn. But all in all Howell has overcome this and prided themselves on playing solid, hard-nosed hockey and of course doing what matters the most: winning.

But now, in their second season, Howell has hit a wall, and they find themselves face-to-face with what could be a brutal dissappointment of a season. Dissappointment? people might ask. As a second year program these boys have gone 14-4-4 to this point, how could you expect any better? Well here at Howell, from the coaches, to the players, and most importantly the fans we expect perfection. Last year, in their innaugural season, Howell stunned the state of New Jersey by overcoming odds to win the Dowd Cup, awarded to the Shore Conference Champions. With the excitement of this moment last year, anything short of a repeat would be a let down. And in 2009-2010, the Rebels did indeed fall short, losing in the semi-finals of the Shore Conference Playoffs, 7-2 to Toms River South.

Sure, there are many excuses that can be made, and rightfully so. Coming into Wednesday night's game ay Winding River, Howell was missing three players that were crucial to their previous success. The injuries to Kotch, Koschenash, and especially Leiro are in essence why Howell's immortality diminshed right? Wrong. Although of course this was a major factor in the semi-final game, Howell has been known to overcome things like this, and continue to play their game. On Wednesday night they were not able to do this and I think I speak for everyone when I say that they were embarrased on the ice.

In my last blog, I spoke about how talent has always been an enormous factor for the Rebels. With the loss of Leiro, Howell was forced to turn to their young, inexperienced players against Toms River South, and they were outworked, outhustled, and just outplayed for fourty-five minutes. There are no excuses; this was not Howell High School Hockey.

So where does Howell turn from here? They can go in with the attitude that if they can't win the shore conference, how are they ever going to make a run in states? Maybe it's true. Maybe down the stretch Howell just doesn't have the talent and the experience to beat teams that have been playing together for their entire lives. But I for one, have confidence in the character of this team. I've seen over the past two years how much this program has meant to the players and to the entire community and I know that the Howell Rebels will go out with a bang.

The road starts Monday, March 1, as Howell will take on the #22 seed West Windsor. How will Howell respond to their loss? Will they be able to play their game, or will they simply concede and play for next year? This is a challenge to the players. Lets see if they prove to everyone that they are an elite team in this state, and they have the character to overcome anything.

Final Score: 1) Toms River South Indians (19-2-2) 7, 4) Howell Rebels (14-4-4) 2

Game Summary: TOMS RIVER -- The top-seeded Toms River Indians proved to everyone why they deserved that seed in the matter of a fifteen-minute period.

In the second period of Wednesday's semi-final game in the Dowd Cup against the fourth-seeded Howell Rebels, the Indians scored six times, more than enough insurance in their 7-2 win. From the drop of the puck, Toms River South dominated the pace of play--not allowing the depleted Rebels to get any form of offense going, as they shut down Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty.

What went wrong: The Howell Rebels can attempt to sit here and blame the beat-down they accepted on Wednesday night on the injuries to Matt Kotch, Mike Liero and Michael Kochenash--but it will be to avail. Everything on this night went wrong for the defending Dowd Cup champions. From the opening face-off to the final whistle, the Indians out-hustled the Rebels to every puck, out-hit the Rebels in every opportunity and flat-out out-played Howell all night. The Rebels couldn't get any offense going and were unable to clear the zone on the defensive end. All-in-all, this game is, without a doubt, the worst night Howell hockey has ever witnessed.

On To Round Two...

After a first round that witnessed a defensive battle, a shocking upset, a fired-up victory and an expected blowout, the 2010 Dowd Cup between Shore 'B' and Shore 'C' teams move on to the semi-finals.

Game One: 3) Freehold Township vs 7) Southern Regional

Previous meeting: Shockingly, in their only meeting this season, the Southern Regional Rams upset the Patriots from Freehold Township 4-1 on February 9th, a victory that caught the eye of many coaches and players. Southern will try to shock everybody again, much like Howell last year, and make it to the Dowd Cup final game, something very unlikely from a 7th seed.

Player to Watch: The Patriots, who are playing in the Dowd Cup for the first time in school history, will need the number one goal-scorer in the state to step up. Senior forward John Talamo has compiled 39 goals over 20 games this season, which is tied for first in the state. If Freehold Township wants to erase the memory of that tough 4-1 loss, Talamo will need to be a major role and be all over the ice--as he was in the first round game Sunday night.

Game Two: 1) Toms River South vs 4) Howell

Previous Meeting: When the Rebels and Indians met at Winding River in Toms River on Janaury 14th, everybody in the arena knew they were in for a good one against two playoff-bound teams. Howell, who had been struggling at the time, scored four-goals in the third period--sparked by a Billy Acquaviva short-handed goal--to come-from-behind and beat the Indians 5-4. Now, the second time around, this semi-finals match-up should be every bit of exciting as the last meeting--if not better.

Player to Watch: In this game there will be a player to watch on both ends. For Howell, senior forward Dave Ramos is a player everyone will being keyed in on. In the first meeting, Ramos was shadowed all game long, yet he still managed to get the primary assist on the game-tying goal and score the game-winning goal. He will have to be on top of his game tomorrow night. As for the Indians, they have a player who will be going through the same drill as Ramos. Junior forward Jay Malone will have to be the catalyst for Toms River South. In the first meeting, Malone saw the ice very well and was a major reason why the Indians were out to a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. If big number nine has a big day, the Indians can find themselves in the Dowd Cup final.

All in all, whichever of these teams advance will prove to be a tremendous final game. Still, I know there are quite a few people who would prefer to see a number three seed and number four seed face off in the final--playing each other for what is potentially the third time this season.

Regardless, all four teams have a tall task ahead of them in the semi-finals, and the eventual winner will have proven to be the most talented, toughest, and clearly, the best.

Stepping up When it Matters

One of the major factors that has contributed to Howell's success over the past two years has been talent. Last year as an expansion team, the Rebels had a brand new head coach and group of players who had never played together before. Still Howell made a remarkable, storybook run that no one including myself could have ever anticipated. But this was largely due to that key ingredient to winning: talent. From former players like Moscowitz and Gaskill, to current players like Ramos and Pyskaty, their knowledge and feel for the game has propelled Howell to where they are today.

Well this year Howell has dramatically changed their style of play. Losing scoring threat Mark Moscowitz Howell has relied on hustle and physicality to take down their oppenents. And hey, it has worked very very well to this point. One of the X-factors for the Rebels this year has been Junior forward Mike Leiro. Leiro, after playing on the first line last season, has assumed the role that Howell lost with Moscowitz's departure, and become a serious scoring threat. It seems to me that all season, whenever someone asked who scored the goals Leiro was always in the conversation. But in last nights shore conference playoff bout the Howell faithful held their breath as Leiro left the ice, holding what seemed to be his elbow. Sources quickly conformed that the Junior had dislocated his shoulder and fractured his clavicle, side-lining him for the rest of the season. So what were the Rebels to do after losing such a serious weapon? They would turn to these young guns to mature right before their eyes.

1. Matt Morelli: Kotchhhhh!!! has always been a common cry in Wall Sports Arena. The small yet hard-nosed defensmen was a fan favorite and probably Howell's #2 defensman before he also suffered a collar-bone injury weeks ago. Since then the Rebels have turned to Morelli to hold up the defense. Not only is he doing this, but he has also shown an offensive mind, putting pucks on net that lead to scoring opportunities. Howell will need him to continue his solid play down the stretch.

2. Michael Koschenash: This Junior forward transferred from CBA with high expectations (especially from Captain Dave Ramos). After seeing limited icetime in the beginning of the season, boy has this kid stepped up. Game after game it seems that he is in the right place at the right time and he has become a scoring presence for Howell. With the loss of Leiro Koschenash will be key to put the puck in the net.

3. Brian George: George is a kid that is a very quiet player on the ice but he also makes serious contributions to the team. Last game in particular, the Junior Forward has flew around the ice and made a name for himself in the Howell Bleachers. Again with the loss of Leiro, the Rebels need him to put pucks in the net.

4. John Glover (I think his name is John?): I show this uncertainty becasue no one has really heard much of Glover. I watched him in JV last year and was very impressed with his play. Now, with an opportunity to play defense at the Varsity level, Glover has become a huge part of the team, allowing Pyskaty and Shiek to take a breather without any worry of a defensive breakdown. This young kid will have to overcome his nerves and keep doing what he is doing to keep Howell's run alive.

All of these players are crucial to Howell's success. As they roll into the tough Toms River South, on Wedensay, 7:30 ET they will need the young guns to step up. Are they ready? We will see.

Dowd Cup Round 1; Final Score: Howell Rebels (14-3-4) 3, Jackson Memorial Jaguars (12-10-2) 1

Game Summary: Who knew it would take a major goal scorer to go down for the Howell Rebels to rejuvenate the fourth-seeded Rebels against Jackson Memorial, seeded fifth, in the first round of the Dowd Cup.

With the score tied at one in the first period, Howell forward Mike Liero went down with a broken collarbone and dislocated elbow, unable to return. In his place would be transfer forward Michael Kochenash with big shoes to fill.

Oh, he was up to the challenge.

With just under ten minutes remaining in the second period, Kochenash would tap-in the go-ahead goal for the Rebels and Howell would never look back. Later in that period, Brian George would bury home a rebound goal, giving Howell a 3-1 lead---the eventual final tally as the Rebels advance to the second round of the Dowd Cup, and will play Wednesday night against the winner of Toms River South and Manasquan.

What went right: Everyone in the building, players included, knew what was going to happen on this night. Anywhere that '11' and '77' in white went, do did two defenders in black. Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty, widely recognized as two of the best playmakers and finishers in the conference, were prepared to be shadowed by opposing defenders all night. Because of that, they, and their teammates, knew it was going to be tough for them to get good shots and decent looks at the net.

Instead, it was the role players who stepped up big, scoring all three goals. Nick Peras, Michael Kochenash and Brian George all delivered, playing roles bigger than even they could have imagined. Although Peras has seen significant ice time all year, his goal to put Howell up early was the confidence booster this team needed.

In the second, Kochenash and George putting home rebounds were just what the Rebels would need. Mind you, Howell has never been one to win pretty--and they don't intend to change that. They'll win anyway they can, even if it means working deep in the trenches of the crease all night long.

Movin' on: With this win, the fourth-seeded Howell Rebels will face the winner of Toms River South (1) and Manasquan (8), who play tomorrow. Howell faced both of these teams in the regular season--defeating both. On January 14th, behind a four-goal third period, the Rebels came from behind to beat the Indians of Toms River South, 5-4. Last Saturday, on senior night, Howell disposed of Manasquan, despite struggling to score with just four goals on forty-five shots.

Regardless of who Howell does eventually play Wednesday night in the second round, their A-game will be a requirement if they want to make a repeating trip back to the Dowd Cup final.

If you can recall, that ended up pretty good for them last year.

Breaking down the seeding

On Saturday morning, as I eagerly awaited for the phone call that would inform me of the seeding for the 2010 Dowd Cup, the Shore Conference Tournament between the 'B' and 'C' teams, it's safe to say Howell, as a community, was disappointed.

In several predictions, the Rebels (13-3-4) were expected to fall anywhere from the first seed to the third seed. Eventually, Howell was awarded the fourth seed, with all three seeds ahead of them being handed out to teams whom Howell has beaten. (Howell defeated Toms River South 5-4 on January 14th, Howell defeated Wall 2-1 on Janaury 19th, Howell defeated Freehold Township 2-1 on December 22nd).

So, why is it, that these defending champion Rebels fall to a spot behind three teams they have defeated?

If you ask me, no, I don't believe Howell has been given the respect they deserve--they are much better than a fourth spot. Still, if you look at Toms River South, Wall, and Freehold Township, they do deserve a lot of credit for what they have done in this, 2009-2010 season.

Toms River South, first of all, deserves the first seed, hands down. Despite falling to Howell, their 17-regular season wins over-rule everything in this case. In those 17 wins, the Indians have rolled off some pretty impressive wins including a 6-2 win over 2nd-seeded Wall, a match-up that would be interesting to see in this tournament. Junior forward Jay Malone has been the key for Toms River South all season, leading them in many of those 17 wins. They are deserving of the number one seed and being selected as the favorite in this Dowd Cup.

The Wall Crimson Knights, coached by Mike Dianora, have also put together a very impressive regular season resume. With a record a 15-3-3 they have compiled a much better winning percentage than the Patriots of Freehold Townships and the Howell Rebels. With losses against only Howell, Toms River South, and Middletown South, Wall has beaten every team that they should have and have only fallen to the creme of the crop.

The Freehold Township Patriots are probably the team that Rebels' fans least wanted to see ahead of them in the bracket. This is, without question, the most doubted selection from the Shore Conference seeding committee. With an 11-6-4 record, one that won't impress anyone, it's a bit surprising to see the Patriots in the third slot. Although they did win the Shore 'C' division, they did not beat Howell this year (one tie, one loss), and had some questionable losses and ties. Early in the season, Freehold Township lost to Ocean, who is playing ice hockey for the first time in their program. On Janaury 14th, the Pats tied St. John Vianney, who have been the bottom-feeders of the conference all season long. On February 9th, Freehold Township fell 4-1 to the Southern Rams--a team they should have beat. This selection is the only one that should arouse several questions from Shore fans everywhere.

As for Howell, they have their work cut out for them. Yes, they have a right to be upset with falling to the fourth seed, but at the end of the day, they've been in this position before.

On Sunday, February 21st, Howell will take on Jackson Memorial in the first round of the Dowd Cup. If the Rebels are here to play, they should run the table as they did last year, and shouldn't have problem beating those top three teams for a second time.

On the other hand, if any two of these top four teams face each other in the final, it will be a beauty to watch.

The key match-up would be Freehold Township vs Howell in what would be their third face-off this season.

Time to Repeat

On Sunday, February 21st, the Howell Rebels (13-3-4) begin their post-season play in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament and are expected to play either Rumson or Southern (the final word won't be released until Saturday night).

In a season filled with revenge-filled victories from the previous season, heart-breaking losses, and a few more ties than people really expected, the Howell Rebels put themselves in the position they wanted to be in: a chance to repeat as Dowd Cup champions.

Last season, few opponents and opposing coaches knew of the abilities of Rebels' captain Dave Ramos. Because of that, Ramos lead the Rebels in a dream season that witnessed Howell's 19-win season and watched them become winner's of the Dowd Cup; with Ramos compiling 97 points on 53 goals and 44 assists in the 24-game long season.

This season, things were different--opponents of Howell came prepared. From the first game-on, Ramos has been shadowed by every team, stopping him from being the same dominant player from last year.

Early in the season, junior defensemen Eddie Pyskaty carried Howell until teams caught on to his offensive ability, and he was defended as well. Throughout the season, Billy Acquaviva, Mike Liero, Nick Peras and Brandon Hodes have picked up goals whenever Ramos or Pyskaty haven't been able to break free.

Now, in the playoffs, the Rebels need to regain the playoff magic that was evident last February. If Howell wants to take that victory lap once again, this time at Winding River Arena in Toms River, it will ultimately come down to Ramos and Pyskaty.

There's no doubt that Ramos will be shadowed. something he's become accustomed to, and Pyskaty may be as well. Regardless, if these two players, who were recently named first team all-division, create consistent scoring chances, and put the puck in the net, the Rebels will be virtually impossible to beat.

On the defensive end, sophomore goaltender Zack Peras needs to play the way he did as the season ended--but he's going to need the same defense in front of him as well. With Pyskaty, who plays on both ends, in front of him, Peras has arguably the most talented defenseman in the conference. With Matt Kotch still out six more weeks because of a broken collarbone, Jon Glover has become a huge part of this team. Undersized, much like Kotch, Glover plays smart, defensive hockey, something this Howell team needs after the struggles late in the third period earlier in the season. On February 16th, in a 6-1 win against Middletown North, the Rebels surrendered just five total shots on net, and it was because of tremendous defense from both Pyskaty and Glover.

As for Peras, if the defense in front of him is at least adequate, he won't have too many problems and certainly won't have a game like he did in the Dowd Cup finals last season, where he was benched late in the second period.

Still, the key to this team is the blue-collar second liners. If Howell wants to advance, Brandon Hodes, Billy Acquaviva and Nick Peras need to keep the pressure up while Ramos is resting on the bench. If they don't give opposing defensemen and goalies a break the Rebels will not lose.

As for me and my fellow fans, also known as 'The Rebellion', we wouldn't mind seeing another Dowd Cup championship.

Final Score: Howell Rebels (13-3-4) 4, Manasquan Warriors (6-14-1) 0.

Game Summary: In a game that is best described as uneventful on senior night for the Rebels and the Warriors, it was Howell that dominated in virtually every aspect of the game, eventually winning 4-0.

Manasquan, although severely over-matched, did an amazing job on the defensive end in for the first period and the majority of the second as well. It wasn't until 10:55 of the second period when Howell captain Dave Ramos put the Rebels on the board putting in a snap shot from the low slot after the Rebels bombarded the Warriors with shots. Later in the period, with 1:11 left in the period, Brandon Hodes poked in a rebound to give Howell the 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

The third period was a breeze for Howell, who controlled play once again. With 4:14 remaining, Nick Peras put home a goal giving the Rebels a 3-0 lead, and under a minute, hard-working and well-respected senior Nick Barone nailed home his first goal of the season, as Howell would eventually win 4-0.

Following the game, 'The Rebellion' was awarded for their support all season, being saluted by the Rebels players.

What went right: There wasn't much that went on, Wednesday night, but in the end, the Howell Rebels took care of business--regardless of how ugly it was. Obviously, head coach Bill Daley played all the seniors (even though he had trouble spelling the names before the game) a move that is expected on senior night. Excellent games all night from Ramos, Eddie Pyskaty, Brandon Hodes and Billy Acquaviva, as they all circulated the puck very well. In the defensive zone, Jon Glover was very impressive along with Matt Schiek and Matt Morelli.

Playoffs: It appears that the Howell Rebels are getting hot at the perfect time. Ending the season with two convincing wins against Middletown North and Manasquan, the Rebels will enter the Shore Conference Tournament with a record of 13-3-4. Earlier in the year, many were speculating that Howell, who consistently tied teams and couldn't seem to put any away, wouldn't make any type of run in either the Shore Conference Tournament, or state playoffs. Now, with seniors Dave Ramos, Nick Peras and Billy Acquaviva playing their final high school games, Howell is a team that some may pick as the favorite to repeat as Dowd Cup champions--and they should. They've had this talent all season long, and finally, they are clicking as a championship-capable team should.

Final Score: Howell Rebels (12-3-4) 6, Middletown North Lions (8-8-4) 1

Game Summary: A four goal second period would eventually propel the Rebels past Middletown North on Tuesday night. Against a Shore 'A' team, few predicted such a lopsided victory for Howell, but even the score doesn't dictate how the Rebels dominated this game.

The first period ended with a 1-0 lead for Howell off of Eddie Pyskaty's rebound off of a Dave Ramos shot that slammed off the post. In the second, goals from Ramos, Michael Koshenash, Mike Liero on his 17th birthday, and Ramos again would put this game out of reach. Not much to really discuss in the third period. Nick Peras would score to give Howell a 6-0 advantage before the Lions would score a garbage goal with the Rebels back-ups in.

Matt Guerrera was magnificient on the blue line, dishing out the body all night long. He proved time and time again why he is an important asset to this team.

There was no better way to cap off the victory then senior Joe Filipkowski. In his first varsity shift, the lanky defensemen displayed some shifty moves and incredible stick-handling, all-the-while dishing out some bone-crunching hits. Very impressive play from him.

What went right: For Howell, there is one major reason why they won rather convincingly, Tuesday night. Five of the six goals were scored on the man-advantage, an element that the Rebels used often early in the season. However, throughout the season, drawing penalties seemed to slow down, and fittingly, so did the play of the team. But on this night, that was back on their side, and they displayed one of the most dangerous power plays in the conference. With Ramos and Pyskaty running the point, the men down low were open for several good looks, almost all of them resulting in goals.

What it all means: There have been times earlier in the season when I've made the statement: Howell hockey is back--but there's no better time to say it then now. In a game against a team that many considered better, playing in the highly-respected Shore 'A', the Rebels dominated from the opening puck drop to the final whistle. Howell out-skated, out-hit, out-shot and simply out-played their opponent and deserved to win with a five goal margin. Of course, there really is no better time for the Rebels to start heat up with the Shore Conference Tournament beginning Sunday night.

One Last Bow

For Howell, days without Dave Ramos aren't exactly a hot topic to speak about. But with two regular season games left, his high school career, along with Nick Peras, Billy Acquaviva and Nick Barone are quickly coming to a close. As they do leave, many are speculating it will be a rather quick exit due to the Rebels up-and-down season.

Well, I think that's up to them to decide.

Each of those players have an important role on this team, and as their season--and careers--wind down, how far Howell does get will have a lot to do with these seniors.

In their junior year, the Rebels shocked everyone as you are well aware, going 19-4-1, winning the Dowd Cup and making a small splash in the state playoffs.

Good teams can do that in their first season; really good teams do it two years in a row. For those of you who don't recall, those juniors played a major part in that Dowd Cup game, an eventual 9-7 win over Wall.

If Howell wants to repeat, and have these seniors go out as winners, it will have to do a lot with themselves. Everyone knows they all have the individual talent to play with anyone in the conference. But for Howell, individual play never got them anywhere.

Let's see the impact these four men will have on Howell deep in the post-season this year:

Dave Ramos: There's really not much explaining here. Ramos is widely considered the best player in the conference, and arguably the state. If Howell wins any games in the Shore Conference Tournament this season, it will be because Ramos fought off double-teams and being shadowed throughout--something he has had to deal with all season long.

Nick Peras: This power forward for Howell has had a little bit of trouble staying out the box so far this season--and that will be a big key for the Rebels down the stretch. When Peras draws penalties, rather than taking them, he is a huge asset on the power play--and that's something that Howell needs to take advantage of.

Billy Acquaviva: Early in the season, Acquaviva was a major scoring threat for the Rebels. Although this shifty winger has been rather quiet lately, it's only a matter of time until he breaks out. He had both goals in a huge 2-1 win against Freehold Township early in the season, and Howell could really use that as Ramos will be shadowed throughout the playoffs.

Nick Barone: Although Barone hasn't had as much ice time as he may like in his senior year, he still plays a major role on this team. Because of his noticeable hard work, Barone has always been a fan favorite for the 'Rebellion' and is always willing to speak with the media about the team. His leadership will never show up on the score-sheet but it is always recognized.

Not just for these men, but for Howell, it's time to ask: Do you want to go out as a one-hit wonder, or an elite Shore Conference team?

The answer is up to you...

2/13 -- Game Recap

Final Score: Howell Rebels (11-3-4) 2, Toms River North Mariners (7-11-2) 1

Game Summary: Late in the third period, with the score tied at one, all eyes at Gold Coast Cadillac Arena knew what number to look at in the blue and grey.

Number eleven, Dave Ramos, Howell's captain took advantage of a crease in Toms River North's defense, which was sturdy all night, netting the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal at 7:54 of the third period. Earlier in the period, it was Mike Liero who broke free down the wing, beating the Mariners goalie Andrew Moser top shelf to tie the game.

Toms River North took the initial lead early in the second period, scoring on a broken play, catching the Rebels by surprise, as they had control of the game up to that point.

A scoreless first period was controlled by Howell until penalties taken by Brandon Hodes and Brian George put the Rebels on the short end of a 5-on-3. The kill, lead by Eddie Pyskaty, was solid the entire period, creating some short-handed chances for Howell.

What Went Right: For one of the first times this season, head coach Bill Daley can say his team finished a game strong. Trailing 1-0 heading into the third period, the Rebels would score twice and shut down the Mariners offense late in the game--something that has posed a major problem for Howell. It seemed apparent early that there was something different in the Rebels game, something that hadn't been there over the past month: a spark. Throughout the first period, it was Howell who were out-skating Toms River North for loose pucks and out-hustling the opponent all night. In the end, that hustle was something that propelled the Rebels to a much needed victory.

Correcting the Problem:All season, the achillies heel for the Howell Rebels have been one thing: holding late leads. Throughout the course of the year, the defending Dowd Cup champs have blown five third-period leads (yes, Daley, I know how many), many within the final five minutes. Tonight was a different story. With seven minutes remaining after Howell took the lead, it was up to their defense to hold the Mariners, who average nearly three goals per game. The Rebels did just that, in some unconventional ways. Instead of focusing on the defensive side of the game, the Rebels, lead in major part by defensemen Eddie Pyskaty, kept the pressure up on offense, making it very difficult for Toms River North to set up the way they may have liked. The Mariners did have some chances late, but Howell goalie Zack Peras was magnificent, turning away every third-period shot as the Rebels earned a much-needed win against a quality opponent.

2/11 -- Finish Strong, Rebs'

On Saturday, the Howell Rebels (10-3-4) will take on the Toms River North Mariners (6-10-2). Following a 15-day lay-off, it should be interesting to see how Howell will play. If you have a hard time remembering, the Rebels blew a late lead in an eventual 4-3 loss vs Middletown South, their fifth blown third period lead this season.

Against the Mariners, Howell will look to turn the tide, with many long-time fans fighting the urge to turn against them. Despite Toms River North being 6-10-2, the Mariners will look for something to be the highlight of their season--and defeating the defending Dowd Cup champs would be a perfect fit.

Despite the sub-500 record, Toms River North have a few solid players that could pose trouble for Howell. Much like Jay Malone of Toms River South, Mike Weltner and Joe Delvachio are terrific skaters who see the ice very well and have great hands--a defensive problem for teams all year, and will without a doubt be one to Howell.

As much as the Mariners are looking to win, this isn't exactly an 'all or nothing' game for them. Just as every opponent this season has, Toms River North will look to slow down Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty, players who seem to be playing a bit worn-out as the season draws to a close. Because of that, the play of the second liners in Howell must rise. Nick Peras has to step up and become a playmaker and do his best to stay out of the box. Brandon Hodes, who has one, very important, goal this season will need to keep up the good work ad a defensive forward. But, with the big players a bit tired, the goals should come from two players who have scored all season: Billy Acquaviva and Mike Liero. These two have seen equal time on the first line, but if head coach Bill Daley puts them together, scoring chances may very well be at a premium.

Now, it's time to mention something that has been playing in the mind of several fans as an answer to Howell defensive woes late in games: implementing the neutral zone trap. For those of you who have never heard this term before, the goal of 'the trap' is to stop the opposing team from advancing the puck into their offensive zone (your defensive zone) by cutting off passing lanes between the blue lines. Although this strategy is used by teams who do not have as much offensive firepower as their opponents, it also a great scheme for protecting a late lead--something the Rebels clearly haven't done. If Bill Daley is willing to teach his boys how to play it correctly, there won't be a chance for mistakes in the defensive zone as there have been as of late.

As for post-season play, the Shore Conference Tournament should be interesting for Howell. If you can remember back to a year ago, the Rebels coasted all the way through the SCT, including a 10-0 win vs Red Bank Regional in the second round. This year, it won't be nearly as easy. Howell struggled enough in the regular season to understand that even advancing one round will be difficult. Still, they do have an advantage that some other teams don't: experience. Despite being in just their second season, they have been through this before and should use that to their advantage.

As for the State playoffs, several experts are expecting an early exit for Howell. Well, I'll tell you why those 'experts' are wrong. Everyone is aware of the skill all over the ice for Howell. They have two of the best finishers in the conference in Ramos and Pyskaty, solid skaters in Liero and Acquaviva, and a tested goalie in Peras. Still, with that, if Howell does want to advance further than last year, something will change: they have to want it. Late leads can't happen--in fact, they need to pull away late, not lose it. Whether it be a coach or player who speaks up, someone reading this blog, or it finally hits the players; something has to change. If it doesn't, you may be able to write off Howell early in states.

...I wouldn't write 'em off just yet, but hey, that's just me.

Send 'em, Daley, Again

For Howell, a key component has become all too common this season--blowing late leads. For a team that is widely considered one of the better public teams in the state, and in games against opponents of higher divisions, losing a late third period lead is not an acceptable habit.

Saturday night's let-down was the sixth this season for Howell and on a team that has the expectations to repeat as Shore Conference Tournament champions, the light at the end of the tunnel seems quite bleak at the moment.

Still, these breakdowns are clearly not due to a lack of talent. The Howell Rebels do have enough talent to win on talent alone. Howell consists of two talented lines, including Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty, who can score from literally anywhere on the ice. Those two scorers are complimented well by Billy Acquaviva and Mike Liero.

Instead, there's something much worse that has been the result of these late-game nightmares for the Rebs.

To be a successful team in any sport, there are two things you must have:
Talent & Heart.

For Howell, I see just one.

On last season's magical season run, there was something very vivid--a confidence a swagger among the players, coaches, and fans--a feeling that they had a strong opportunity to win every game they played.

This year, that swagger has disappeared as it is evident within the body language of all the players and coaches that they can't win every game they play and the second that goes through the mind of a player, a chance to win the game is gone. Confidence is a funny thing--its contagious and can lead a team through almost any situation.

But it's not all the players fault for the sub-par performance displayed by Howell this season.

Howell head coach Bill Daley made conscious decision back in December that he would once again play two lines--and the fans understand that is the best move.

But, Mr. Daley, let me pose a few questions to you?

When's the last time you demanded suicides of your players that wasn't a punishment? When's the last time you had them run extensively on the track? When's the last time you scheduled a weight lifting day for your Rebels?

Mr. Daley, if you want to play two lines, fine, that's the smart move, but you better be sure those two lines could play 45 minutes of a hockey game. Clearly, they cannot. For the sixth time, you've watched your boys chasing pucks, scrambling in the defensive zone late in the third period, only to watch them lose a late lead or even lose the game.

As a writer, but most importantly, as a fan, that's not something any of us can witness to watch.

Players, if we take the time to come to every game, if I take the time to take notes on your games, do us all a favor and take the time to prepare yourselves as athletes and care about what you work* for.

Yes, you know why the asterisk is there.

1/30--The Recap

Middletown South Eagles (10-3-2) 4, Howell Rebels (10-3-4) 3

1st Period Analysis: In the first, the initial two minutes were controlled by the Eagles from Middletown South--but it would end there. The Rebels would take over from there, including two power play goals within thirty seconds from Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty to give Howell the 2-0 edge, and the period would end with the same score.

2nd Period Analysis: Whatever dominance that was owned by Howell in the first played role-reversal in the second. After both teams killed off penalties early, it was Middletown South who controlled possession of the puck, drawing within one on a delayed-penalty goal with just under ten minutes remaining. Minutes later, a Howell power play goal would be called off due to the net leaving its moorings, and the Eagles would go on to kill the penalty un-scaved. The 26th-ranked Eagles would control the rest of the period, and head into the locker room trailing 2-1.

3rd Period Analysis: After the Rebels killed another early penalty, it was Michael Koshenash who would score for Howell, giving them an early 3-1 lead. From that goal on, the Eagles would take over. Middletown South would dictate play, coming from behind to score three goals in the final ten minutes, taking the game 4-3.

The Final Tally: This game was not a matter of Middletown South beating Howell--Howell beat themselves. Instead, a bland Howell crowd watched something that has become somewhat common--the Rebels blowing a late lead. Fatigue was clearly an issue, particularly in the defensive zone, as Howell watched their sixth blown lead of the season take place before their eyes.

1/29--The Preview

Middletown South Eagles (9-3-2) at Howell Rebels (10-2-4)

Meet the Opponent: The Eagles, ranked 26th overall in the state, display a strong defensive attack that flat-out knows how to stop teams, yielding only 2.5 goals a game. With a record of 9-3-2, and losses only to CBA, Brick Memorial, and Middletown North, the Eagles are one of the best public teams in the state (ranked 13th in public) and are looking for another 10-win season.

Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Dave Ramos'. Ramos, who sits atop the Shore Conference in points, is coming off a 10-day lay-off and will need to produce Saturday night. Although Ramos is having nowhere near the statistical season that he had last year (53 goals, 97 points in '08-'09), he still has been much more of a leader on a team that has faced adversity for the first time, and has been double-teamed all season.

Middletown South Eagles X-Factor : 'Team Defense'. Surprisingly, the Eagles have not built their success off of scoring goals, like many high school programs do. Instead, they pride themselves on defense, as stated before allowing just 2.5 goals per game. However, that pride will be at stake on Saturday night, as Middletown South will do the best to neutralize Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty, to highlight-reel potential players game in and game out. If the Eagles stop these two prolific scorers, their odds at knocking off the 33rd ranked Rebs are much higher.

The Prediction: Howell defeats Middletown South 5-3. Although this is a very competitive game early, the red-hot Rebels will pull away in the third period in front of the typically-sold out crowd at Wall and improve their winning-streak to five games.

1/28--The Final Act

This season, the Howell Rebels have accumulated a record of 10-2-4, good enough to be ranked #28 overall in the state, and clinching a state playoff berth. With that said, there is no easy road ahead for the Rebels, with six remaining games. Let's take a closer look at the teams Howell will play in an attempt to gain momentum heading into postseason play.

January 30th: Middletown South (9-3-2, 25th overall). Without a doubt, the toughest test for the playoff-bound Rebs, as Middletown South is the only remaining team on the schedule that is ranked higher than Howell. With impressive wins all season long, it will be interesting to see how Howell matches up with the Eagles, who have only suffered losses to CBA, Brick Memorial, and Middletown North.

February 3rd: Woodbridge (4-12, 124th overall). This game really has no business being a competitive won for the Rebels, who just attain too much firepower on the offensive side of the puck. Look for a lot of Rebels seniors to see action in this game, which should be nothing short of a laugher.

February 6th: Point Pleasant Borough (5-12-2, 110th overall). Much like the previous game, this game shouldn't be too much trouble for Howell. The Panthers, who give up 3.16 goals per game, will have a lot of trouble stopping the scoring attack from Howell, who averages nearly 5 goals a game.

February 9th: At Northern Highlands (9-5-2, 29th overall). Most likely the most intriguing game for Howell down the stretch. In terms of GAA and GF, the Highlanders and Rebels nearly mirror each other, as they match-up nicely up and down the roster. Literally on top of each other in the rankings, this game may very well come down to the final moments of the third period.

February 13th: Toms River North (5-8-2, 80th overall). This is the game I will highlight for the Howell Rebels. This game is what one would call a trap game. The Mariners have a had a more-than-forgettable season, and defeating the Rebels in Wall would make up for the sub-par play they displayed this year. The Rebels will have to be on their toes all night, especially early, as Toms River North will look to come out on the attack right out of the locker room.

February 17th: At Manasquan (4-11, 112th overall). If the Rebels win the aforementioned six games, this one should be a breeze. The Big Blue Warriors don't have much to account for on the defensive side of the puck, so it shouldn't take long for Ramos, Pyskaty and the rest of Howell to find the net and dominate this game.

If Howell can find a way to win or tie all six of those games, they put themselves in position to make another run at the Dowd Cup, and maybe even strike deep into the state playoffs.

1/24--The Man Behind it All

After every goal, big hit, crisp pass, win and loss for the Howell Rebels, there is a man with a black overcoat, clipboard tucked under his arm, and a straight-forward concentrated expression on his face at all times.

The man is Bill Daley, the head coach for the Rebels, and a state champion at Toms River North as a player.

In this, his second season as the Howell Rebels coach, Daley has complied a career record of 29-6-5, something that is unheard of in New Jersey high school hockey, especially in the programs first two years.

Although Daley has had the opportunity to coach future college/juniors players, such as Dave Ramos (97 points last season) and Eddie Pyskaty, he has implemented a no-nonsense type of policy that separates Howell from most of the Shore Conference.

On game days, despite Daley teaching at Marlboro, players wear shirt and ties and arrive at the school dressed the same, a policy that few schools use--especially in the first years of their existence.

However, it's not just off the ice that Daley enforces this policy. Throughout his two years, in games and practices, the former state champion has stressed that hard-work will always help you achieve success, and never taking penalties helps just a bit.

Because of Daley's stressing of this topic, and excluding Nick Peras, the Rebels are one of the least penalized teams in the conference, a big reason why they will be playing playoff hockey for the second straight season.

Still, Daley isn't exactly your typical hard-nosed, no-fun hockey coach. He is a favorite among the usually-large student section at Howell, and slowly is starting to understand why these fans show up over an hour prior to the game starting.

He may never show the emotion that you would like to see, but the occasional little smirk that he showed after Howell won the Dowd Cup in early 2009 is enough to understand the modest, yet great mind that leads the Howell Rebels.

1/23-- The Preview

Howell Rebels (9-2-4) at Paramus Catholic Paladins (4-9)

Meet the Opponent: Paramus Catholic, coached by Keith Bland, has struggled to put the puck in the net this year. Through 13 games so far, they have only scored 23 goals, averaging less than 2 goals a game (1.77). Their goaltending, however, has been stellar in their 4 wins allowing 4 goals in those games combined. Ranked 98th in the state (25th private), upsetting Howell is something that would be the highlight of their season.

Keys to the Game-Howell: Any time a heavy favorite takes on an underdog, it is important for the favorite to get an early lead trying to crush any idea's the underdog has of winning. That's the type of situation Howell will be in tomorrow afternoon. Whether they grab an early lead or not is up to them. After two huge wins over Wall and Toms River South, the Rebs must not overlook Paramus Catholic or look too far down the road with the 1/30 showdown at Middletown South.

Keys to the game-Paramus Catholic: Bearing some sort of incredible run where the Paladins win out, the Paladins probably aren't going to make the playoffs. Beating a team like Howell would be the highlight of their year, something they can build around for next year. In order to win they are going to have to play 'the perfect' game. Very tight defense will be needed to limit the Rebels chances and Paramus must capitalize on all of theirs. That's something I don't see happening. Prediction: 6-1 Rebels

1/22--The Ultimate X-Factor

For all hockey teams, the player with the biggest impact is the goalie.

For the Howell Rebels (9-2-4), it is no different.

After being named the regular starter early in 2008, Zack Peras started virtually every game for the 2008-2009 Howell Rebels, who finished 19-4-1 and won the Dowd Cup.

In his sophomore campaign, the trip for Peras has not been as easy.

Despite starting out the season with a 23-save shutout, Peras struggled shortly after and was benched three games into the season in favor of James Bodeker, who lead Howell to an 8-2 win against Freehold Borough.

Earning his job back through impressive work in practice, a motivated Peras tallied two more victories before going down for three weeks with a concussion.

Kyle Conrad filled in nicely as a third string goalie, winning three games and not losing in the absence of Peras.

Since his return from the concussion, the sophomore standout has become a new man. Coming off two much needed victories against teams atop the Shore 'B', Howell has been rejuvenated and are ready to finish the season strongly.

If the Rebels want any chance at even returning to the Dowd Cup, however, it'll have to be behind the Peras of last year; with his confident swagger, great attitude, and most importantly, his wins.

1/21 The Improvement of the Shore 'C'

The Shore C, a new division to Shore Conference last year, is a division that often gets overlooked often for no other reason than the 5 programs (Howell, Freehold Township, Freehold Boro, Marlboro, and Manalapan) are still new to hockey. Last year, it was called a one team division with Howell going undefeated in divisional play and winning the Shore ‘C’. Howell also went on to win the Dowd Cup (Shore B and C teams compete for the Dowd Cup)beating Rumson-Fair Haven in the first round, blowing out Red Bank Regional 10-0 in the semi-finals, and defeated Wall in a crazy 9-7 win for the Dowd Cup at the Armory last year. What do all those teams Howell defeated have in common? They were part of the Shore B division. That was just the first of the Rebels playoff tournaments’ last year, they also qualified for the state playoffs. Marlboro qualified for the state playoffs too, but admittedly, they were never really a threat.

This year, things have changed. In the first week of the season, the Freehold Township Patriots defeated current public number 7 in the njpowerranking.com rankings, Kinnelon Colts. That was great news for fans of the Shore C knowing that it wasn’t just Howell finding success out of division play. This year, the Patriots found a way to upset Howell and claim the Shore C championship. The race was very close between 3 teams, Howell, Freehold Township and Manalapan who all finished within 3 points of each other. Howell has continued to have success outside the division, beating Brick Memorial in the season opener, beating SJV, tying Monsignor Donovan (all Shore A teams). The Rebels have also beat the top 2 Shore B teams this year in Toms River South and Wall. There is no reason for the lack of respect to continue, I would not be surprised at all to see a Shore C team win the Dowd Cup again, and there is no reason why one of them cannot do some damage in the state playoffs.

1/20--The Path To Success

When people associated with Howell Hockey hear the last name "Hodes", they think of the man who is responsible for starting Howell Hockey. Ricky Hodes, a man devoted to hockey, Howell is particular, has been at every game alongside his wife, Doris, rooting on the Rebels. There is their youngest son, Brian, who is seen around the student section at every game, opening the entrance to the rink for the team.
Then there is there older son, Brandon, who is a second-line forward for Howell, but hasn't been recognized as more than that for some time now.
In the most important game in Howell High School Hockey history, the Dowd Cup on February 27th, 2009, Hodes made the first noticeable impact in his high school hockey career.
After taking a 9-7 lead against the Wall Crimson Knights, in a game where the winner would be crowned Shore Conference Tournament champions, the Howell Rebels took a crucial penalty late in the game that would last through the end of regulation.
As the regular penalty killers on the blue and gray took the ice, it was then-sophomore forward Brandon Hodes who stole the show--killing the final minute alone, taking on three Knights while successfully maintaining possession of the puck--which eventually lead to the Rebels victory lap around the Red Bank Armory, celebrating their victory.
This season, Hodes has been strictly popularized for his defensive work, specifically his shadowing job against John Talamo of Freehold Township.
But on January 19th in, as many called it, a must-win game for Howell against Wall yet again on the line, it was Brandon Hodes who stepped up and scored with just 1:11 remaining, sending the typically-packed Howell crowd into a frenzy, giving the Rebels their second straight impressive win, and solidifying the idea that Howell hockey is back.
Oh yeah, and it was on the penalty kill yet again.

Howell Rebels Team Analysis: After being shut down in the first period, Howell came out firing in the second with goals being scored by Dave Ramos and Mike Liero off of a slapshot from Eddie Pyskaty. Late in the game, after Wall fighting back to tie the game, junior forward Brandon Hodes played the hero role, scoring with 1:11 remaining in the game, shorthanded, from a centering pass from Ramos. Zack Peras was solid in net, allowing just two goals, and weathering some bad storms from the Crimson Knights.
Wall Crimson Knights Team Analysis: In a rematch of last years Dowd Cup Championship Game, Wall came out with a purpose: to prove they can beat Howell (0-2 last season). After scoring early, Wall held into a 1-0 lead throughout the entire first period, and showed great resiliency fighting back to tie the game at two early in the third period. A bad bounce on the powerplay cost the the Crimson Knights the game as Howell captain Dave Ramos found the puck on his stick and assisted on the Rebels game winning goal. Impressive defense was displayed all night by Wall, as they constantly had a man on Ramos and Pyskaty, two feared scorers.
What's Next: On Sunday, Howell will travel to Paramus Ice House to take on Paramus Catholic, with Howell being the heavy favorite.

Wall Crimson Knights (11-1-1) at Howell Rebels (8-2-4)
Meet the Opponent: Coming off the heartbreaking Dowd Cup Championship Game loss against Howell, the Knights have come out firing in 2009-2010. With just one loss to Middletown South (who is currently ranked #19 in the state overall), Wall stands at 11-1-1, 23 points, a record that has them in first place by four points in the Shore 'B'.
Wall Crimson Knights X-Factor: 'Vinnie Stagliano'. Stagliano has been one of the premier scorers for the Knights this season for an offense that has been almost unbeatable (6.19 goals per game). Wall scored seven goals in that Dowd Cup game last February and Stagliano will have to lead the charge on Tuesday from them to repeat that in an effort to out-score Howell.
Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Zack Peras'. in the championship game last year, Peras was pulled halfway through the second period after giving up five goals to the Knights. Coming back strongly this year, he needs to prove to Howell, Wall, and himself that he has the ability to play well enough in a big game to get the win.
The Outcome: Howell defeats Wall 5-4. In a game that is a little more controlled than the Dowd Cup Championship game, the Rebels will win in a back-and-forth game, with a late goal from Ramos finishing off the Knights.

1/17--Support Goes a Long Way

Unlike any other team not only in the shore, but even in the state, the Howell Rebels hockey team draws fans.
For those Rebels, and their fans known as "The Rebellion", it started small, last year in their inaugural season, with more fans showing up game-by-game as the team got better and better.
This season, however, the idea of a fan base has skyrocketed.
On a daily basis, the Howell fans arrive at the games at the Wall Rink about 45 minutes, prior to the game starting, regardless of who the opponent it.
On December 1st, Howell drew an estimated 300 fans as they took on Brick Memorial, who was ranked in the top 30 in the state at the time
Four games later, against the winless Colonials of Freehold Borough, Howell drew an estimated 210 fans.
But this Rebellion doesn't just live for home games. Over the two years a large majority of the fans have traveled to Steinart, Woodbridge, Red Bank, Toms River, and are expected to travel to Paramus and the Northern Highlands.
Howell's fan base has sparked some fire between rival programs, such as Freehold Township, who have become the second team in the division to come up with a respectable sized fan base.
Some schools only bring fans when facing Howell, such as Wall, who was fan-less when the Knights took on CBA, one of the top teams in the state.
Certainly, Howell has become one of the top public teams in the state because of their players, but one can't forget the people who have been chanting in the uncomfortable six-rowed wooden seats for almost every game--they too make a difference.

1/16--A Lack of Respect

Howell is widely considered one of the top public teams in the state, widely because of their tremendous run last season, winning the Dowd Cup. However, since the streak of three straight ties early this season, Howell has continuously fallen in the state rankings, with them falling the lowest in the most recent ranking, 30.
To the state's credit, Howell has not played up to most expectations--certainly not theres.
But, to Howell's credit, they do have just two losses against a fair schedule for a team in their second season, and they do not just face Shore 'C' teams.
They went skate for skate with Monsignor Donovan, a top-notch private school that annually recruits kids to play hockey.
They defeated and shut out Brick Memorial, a school that is usually among the best in the conference and shore, and has chemistry that is impossible to have in the land-of-the-Rebels.
And, as expected, there is a wide lack of respect for the Shore 'C' division in itself. New teams, yes, but bad teams, no. With the exception of Freehold Boro, the division consists of four teams who are extremely competitive, have very improved goalies from last year, and are likely sending three of those teams to the State Playoffs.
Still, for Howell the two upcoming games will have a huge affect on there rankings, and will show how good they really are.
On Tuesday, Howell will face-off against rival Wall in their first meeting since Howell ousted Wall in the Dowd Cup last year, becoming Shore B/C champs. Wall hasn't forgotten about the first-year program that stopped them from hoisting the plaque, and will be out to beat Howell. The Knights aren't shabby at all themselves, ranked 32nd, with a record of 11-1-1.
After almost a two week layoff, Howell will take on Middletown South, in a game that could mean a lot seeding-wise for the State Playoffs. The Eagles of Middletown South are ranked 19th overall, with a record of 7-2-2.
With Howell's track record, and their schedule coming up, I'm challenging you, as a fan, writer, or just a reader, to write off the Rebels. It will come near impossible.
Trust me, I've tried.

1/15--The Turnaround

It very well may have taken a future professional hockey player--and arguably one of the best players in the state--to slide across the blue line and block a potential game-tying slapshot from the point to defeat Toms River South, but surely, it was done. Along with the block, Dave Ramos scored the go-ahead goal with four minutes left to give the Rebels a lead they would not relinquish.
Senior forward Billy Acquaviva sparked a four-goal third period, when he drew Howell within one on a shorthanded goal. Eddie Pyskaty would add another goal while standing tall on defense the entire night.
Still, this is a Howell team that has struggled in third periods.
December 5th, 2009: Howell vs Monsignor Donovan. With a two goal lead heading into the intermission, the Griffins storm back in the third period and score two, as the teams end up tied at 3.
December 8th, 2009: Howell vs Marlboro. The Mustangs and Rebels trade goals all night, and even Pyakty's hat trick and four point clinic wouldn't be enough, as Marlboro would come back to tie it with 15.3 seconds remaining in regulation.
December 29th, 2009: Howell vs Manalapan. Leading all game, Howell would fall apart in the third period, giving up three unanswered goals to the Braves, who would take the game 6-5, handing the Rebels their first division loss in school history.
January 9th, 2010: Being tied heading into the intermission, a beautiful breakaway goal from Ramos wouldn't be enough, as Freehold Township answered less than a minute later, and the teams ended in a tie at 3.
But on this night, Ramos wasn't having any of that. He may never say it, but in every stride he took, you could tell he wasn't leaving Toms River without a win.
Still, there was something different about this Howell Rebels team than what had been seen all season long.
Whether it be in Ramos modest fist-pump after scoring the go-ahead goal, or when Pyskaty literally threw a kid by lifting his stick, there was a message to be sent to not only the shore conference, but to themselves: This is Howell Hockey.
For the first time since the Shore Conference Championship game last year (Howell defeated Wall 9-7), the Rebels were confident--not cocky, they had a swagger where they realized they deserved to be labeled as the best.
But most importantly, they left the ice with a win, something they'll look to repeat next time they are on that ice, for the 2010 Dowd Cup.

Howell Rebels Team Analysis: For the Howell, it took arguably the best player in the state to slide in front of a potentinal game-tying slapshot from the blue line to pull out a wild 5-4 win vs Toms River South. The man, Dave Ramos also scored the go-ahead goal for the Rebels in a third period that witnessed four Howell goals, as the Rebels defeated Toms River South 5-4. Goals from Eddie Pyskaty (2), Billy Acquaviva, Ramos, and Mike Koshenash pushed Howell over the Indians. Zack Peras was solid net, but the Rebels offense stole the show, registering 48 shots.
Toms River South Indians Team Analysis: The Indians proved why they are one of the toughest teams in the shore to beat, in large part due to Jay Malone, who scored twice, leading an offense that only registered 18 shots, but made most of their oppurtunity. Shadowing Ramos is a tough job, but TRS did an impressive one for most of this game.
What's Next: On Tuesday, Howell will face Wall Township for the first time since the two teams met last year in the Shore Conference Championship game. Rivalries created last year will be back among the Ramos-lead Rebels.

Meet the Opponent: After suffering their first loss of the season on Tuesday (4-0 loss vs Toms River North), the #45 Toms River South Indians stand with a record of 9-1-1, which included win streaks of four games and five, and the Bill McKinnon-led team will look to rebound off a struggling Howell squad.
Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Resiliency'. The Rebels have to come out in this game showing some kind of fight after Tuesday's performance (4-1 loss vs Brick). Not only from captains Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty, who come to play daily, but from the entire team. Howell needs to understand they are in a virtual must-win game, as another loss can send them in a tailspin to finish the season.
Toms River South Indians X-Factor: 'Defense + Goaltending'. With a team GAA of 1.55, the Indians need to keep Howell out of scoring position, Ramos in particular. If they neutralized Ramos and don't allow Howell to get in a rhythm offensively, as Brick did, Howell could suffer their first losing streak in school history.
The outcome: Howell defeats Toms River South 5-3. An emotional talk from Ramos before the game will spark Howell, and reunite them with their winning ways in a game they must have. Pyksaty will see more time on offense, a position he is more comfortable with, and that will help the Rebels beat the Indians.

Final Score: Brick Township Dragons (8-1-2) 4, Howell Rebels (7-2-4)
Brick Dragons Team Analysis: Following a game where Brick accepted a 6-1 beatdown from the Brick Memorial Mustangs, the Dragons came out with a purpose against Howell. Brick Township scored early, and after a powerplay goal mid-way through the second period, they had the game in hand. Due to great goaltending, the Dragons coasted through the final period and took it easily, 4-1.
Howell Rebels Team Analysis: For Howell, things could not get worse on Tuesday evening. In a game where many speculated the playoff-bound Rebels would rebound well after a modest tie against freehold Township in the divisional championship, Howell simply did not show up. They were outplayed and outhustled in every phase of the hockey game, and deserved every bit of the 4-1 loss from the Dragons. The usual lively Howell crowd seemed humbled and disappointed as many left the game after two periods, a sight that is very rare in Howell. Billy Acquaviva scored the lone Rebels goal on a rebound off a shot from Ramos.
What's Next: On Thursday, the road doesn't get easier for Howell, who will travel to Toms River to face-off against the 9-0-1 Toms River South Indians. If Howell loses, they can be in a tailspin heading into postseason hockey--a road they do not want to go down.

Brick Township Dragons (7-1-2) at Howell Rebels (7-1-4)
Meet the Opponent: The Brick Township Dragons, coached by Bob Auriemma, are one of the top teams in the state, ranked 13th overall, and 7th publically. With a standing record of 7-1-2, they have just recently lost to Brick Memorial, and both ties came against Monsignor Donovan and Red Bank Catholic, two private schools that thrive on hockey.
Brick Township Dragons X-Factor: 'Goaltending'. With a goals against average (GAA) of 1.78, they have been almost impossible to score against, as they top the score in that category. Howell will be tough to defend, as they have four major scorers in Dave Ramos, Billy Acquaviva, Mike Liero, and Eddie Pyskaty. Goaltending will have to be stronger than normal to shut down a Rebels team that averages 4.58 goals per game.
Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Pride'. If this Howell Rebels team wants to be anything like a mirror image from a year ago, pride must carry them in this one. The Rebels have to be upset with their tie vs Freehold Township on Tuesday, and use that tie as a motivator in this game, vs an even tough opponent in Brick Township. If the Ramos-led Rebels have any pride in them like last year, they will come out of the gates angered and with a chip on their shoulder to prove how good they are.
The Outcome: Howell defeats Brick Township 4-3 in a wild game. With chances at a premium, I see both goalies being substantial when given the opportunity, and this game will come down to Howell converting on more chances than Brick Township.

1/10--There are no stats for LEADERSHIP

In arguably the biggest game in Howell Rebels hockey history, many speculated on who would step up in the blue and gray on Saturday night in the divisional championship game vs Freehold Township. Some figured it would be Billy Acquaviva or Mike Liero, two perennial first-liners for Howell. Others thought it would be everyday second-liners such as Nick Peras, Brandon Hodes, or Austin Crane. Even head coach Bill Daley wasn't sure who would light the lamp for the Rebels.
In the end, it was two men who provided the scoring for Howell. Two men, who have made Howell hockey what it has been in it's first two young, yet exciting seasons. One of them, well known across the state and is widely considered one of the best to grace the ice in the division, conference, and state, sporting the captain's 'C' in both seasons for Howell. The other, known widely by simply his first name, hasn't been known as well as the first, but has every reason to be, his name constantly displayed across the top of the leaders for defensemen in the state.

With the entire town of Howell in attendance, Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty, put on a show, with Ramos scoring the first and third goal, and Pyskaty scoring the middle one, a game-tying goal with thirty seconds remaining in the second period.
With Ramos celebrating his first goal by his exciting point to the crowd, and Pyskaty simply greeting his teammates after his tying goal from the point, these two clearly are not the same type of player.
Ramos is one of the most talented in the state, and although he may not act it, his confidence and swagger is something that represents Howell hockey--and their fans--and has for two seasons, a large reason why the Rebels won the Shore Conference Tournament last season. Pyskaty, or 'Eddie', is without doubt one of the best defensemen in the state, as he possesses an offensive awareness that many have, but it's as if he isn't aware himself of just how good he is. Pyskaty constantly tells people that his success comes from his teammates, a trait that only few players are lucky to have--modesty.
Still, on a typical day in lunch, you'll find Ramos and Pyskaty cracking jokes with each other, always asking me about this very blog. That is what seperates these two stars, and this program, from any other. It may not seem it, but that type of personality in itself is leadership. The fact that they take the time to talk to, not just me, but any everyday fan, about hockey or any aspect of life.
Those two men are the reason Howell will be playing playoff hockey for the second consecutive season, and the reason Howell hockey is known for what it is today.

Final Score: Freehold Township Patriots (7-2-2) 3, Howell Rebels (7-1-4) 3
What it Means: With the tie between Rebels and Patriots, Freehold Township is crowned Shore 'C' champions because they have more intra-division wins than Howell. Still, both the Rebels and Patriots are set to qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament as the first and second seed in every division enter.
Freehold Township Team Analysis: The Patriots came out Saturday night with a mission to play the Rebels--and that they did. Lead by John Talamo, who scored twice, and is one of the best scorers in the shore, the Patriots matched the Rebels goal-for-goal. Very impressive game from Freehold Township goalie Zach Roy, who faced 30+ shots, allowing just three. Freehold Township's team defense was a definite game-changer for the Pats who did a good job of shutting down the high-flying Rebels offense.
Howell Rebels Team Analysis: For the Rebels, head coach Bill Daley turned to his captains to lead them in what many considered the biggest game in the Rebels young, but storied history. Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty supplied both goals for Howell, two coming from Ramos, and one from Pyskaty respectivley. Despite the efforts from these two scorers, including a magnificent breakaway goal from Ramos, Freehold Township had an answer for all three. Daley showed his belief in sophomore goaltender Zack Peras, who made his first start since facing Marlboro on December 26th. Peras was strong, making a few remarkable saves, and, as Roy, only allowing three.
What's Next: On Tuesday, January 12th, Howell will take on the 7-0-2 Brick Township Dragons, who are ranked 13th overall in the state. The road only gets tougher for Howell as they will take on Toms River South, and Wall in the next week and a half.

Divisional Championship Game: Howell Rebels (7-1-3) at Freehold Township Patriots (7-2-1)
Tomorrow, the Howell Rebels and Freehold Township Patriots will face-off in a one game, winner-takes-all Shore 'C' division championship game. Instead of the traditional X-Factors that I include, I will instead go in depth on the two most important match-ups in this championship game.
Matchup #1: Howell goalie vs Zach Roy. The reason I did no specify in Howell's goalie is because it is still uncertain. I am leaning towards Kyle Conrad to get the nod for the Rebels, who has looked impressive in his four starts since Zack Peras went down two weeks ago. Although Patriots goalie Zach Roy got nailed with a L vs Howell in the first game, he face upward of 40 shots, and was extremely sharp against the highly touted Rebels offense. The junior goalie will have to be spectacular again if he wants Freehold Township to have a chance to overtake Howell as the Shore 'C' Division champs.
Matchup #2: Brandon Hodes vs John Talamo. In the first game, Hodes shadowed #17 John Talamo all game, as the leading scorer for the Patriots was shut down, not able to register a point as he watched his Patriots fall 2-1 to the Rebels. Talamo will have to make an impact, whether it be a goal or an assist, in round two of this rivalry. Hodes is one of the best skaters on the Rebels and will need to duplicate his performance from the first game--even if that means throwing a Patriot into the crossbar again. This matchup will be fun to watch all night, and will play a major factor in the outcome of this game.
The Outcome: The Howell Rebels defeat Freehold Township Patriots 7-3 (Yes, you read that correctly). Motivated by the negative talk towards there play, Howell will come out ready and loaded and will score early and often on Freehold Township. The constant pressure will be too much for Zach Roy and the Pats defense to handle, and Howell will be crowned division champs for back-to-back seasons.

1/7--The Big Three

Last season, the Shore 'C' division was dominated completely, and solely, by the Howell Rebels, who finished an impressive 19-4-1. In 2009-2010, things changed. The Rebels have still showed up, but they have been, not only challenged, but defeated within the division for the first time in the two-year history of the program. In this blog, we will take an in depth look at just how the top three teams have made the Shore 'C' an amazing division to watch, and have created rivalries that are hoped to be continued for a long time.
The Boys on top: Last season, the Howell Rebels brought a new passion to the game of hockey, especially for the Shore 'C' division. The students quickly supported the boys in blue and gray, and not before long, the Rebels were defeating teams left and right, and found themselves finishing with an astonishing record of 19-4-1, winning the Shore Conference Tournament, defeating the Wall Knights. Howell went on to win two games in the state playoffs before being ousted in the third round by the Brick Memorial Mustangs, 4-2. In the second year under head coach Bill Daley, Howell started off strong in a 1-0 win over the same Mustangs that ended their season just six months earlier, but struggled in intra-divisional play, as they tied Monsignor Donovan, Manalapan, and Marlboro all consecutively. The Rebels' lone loss came against rival Manalapan in a wild 6-5 game. This season, it hasn't just been captains Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty who has lead the Rebels--but everyone else, also. Role players such as Mike Liero, Billy Acquaviva, Brandon Hodes, along with goalies Zack Peras and Kyle Conrad have paved the way for an exciting postseason, and deserve as much credit as anyone else. Howell now stands at 7-1-3 with 17 points, first in the division.
Coming on Strong: Last season, the Freehold Township Patriots struggled to a 10-9-2 record, and finished 99th in the state. in 2009-2010, the Patriots were determined to change all of that--and they did. Lead in large part by senior forward John Talamo and junior goalie Zach Roy, Freehold Township has made tremendous strides, as they stand at 7-2-1. With losses to Ocean and Howell, the Patriots have put themselves in a position to win the division, they simply need to beat those ever-hated Rebels from Howell, not an easy feat by any means. Regardless of where thy finish, Freehold Township, coached by Michael Celano, has distinguished a rivalry with Howell, a tradition in Freehold, and many have supported them because of it.
Making Ground: Last season, the Manalapan Braves finished at 9-5-3, ranked 76th in the state, but never made a serious run at any postseason play. Although they did create a rivalry with the first-place Rebels, their nine wins were not enough to make any ground on Howell. This season, things changed. The Braves, sparked by their youth, especially from freshman forward Travis Geraci, who scored a hat trick in their 6-5 defeat of Howell, made up some serious ground in the division, and fell just one victory short of having a chance to win the division. The Dave-Grippo coached Braves are sitting at 6-3-3, and in position to take part in a very competitive Shore Conference Tournament next month. With their positive attitude, exciting, fast paced style, and extraordinary talent with such a young team, Manalapan may not be able to do much this postseason, but they will be exciting to watch for the next couple of years.
Regardless of whether your a fan of one of these Shore 'C' division schools, or even a fan of one of the top private schools in the state, respect is something you must have for these schools, coaches, and fans, for the amount of impressive work they have put together in just two seasons.

1/6--The Primetime Performers

Last season, Dave Ramos carried the Rebels in every way possible. He set up goals, scored goals, dished out the hits, and even killed penalties.
This year, everyone affiliated with Howell knew that would change.
From opening night against the Brick Memorial Mustangs, Ramos was hounded by two players, who had the sole assignment of stopping Ramos--or at best slowing him down.
For the most part, everty team has been able to stop Ramos from scoring, but slowly, he has been able to keep his teammates on track, occasionally breaking free and setting up goals for linemantes Mike Liero and Billy Acquaviva.
And it's because of those two, that the Howell Rebels are where they are at today, a chance to win their second consecutive division.
Mike Liero is a tall, physical forward, with easily the best stick-handling skills on the Rebels. He's known for his dominant play deep in the offensive zone, and last season, was part of the famous Ramos-Moscowitz-Liero line that dominated teams all over the state. Heading into this year, Daley needed Liero to step up as a prominent goalscorer, and he has done exactly that. With eight goals in the last three games, Liero has had the hot hand for Howell, and they will need that hand to stay relatively warm for the remainder of the season.
Billy Acquaviva has been hands-down the most pleasent suprise for Howell this season. Although many were aware of his natural talent at shooting the puck, Acquaviva was a solid second liner for last season, along with the beginning of 2009-2010, until the first meeting between the Rebels and the Patriots in late December. In that 2-1 victory for Howell, Acquaviva netted both goals for the Rebels, and has since been part of the lethal Ramos-Liero-Acquaviva line. Despite being sometimes streaky, Acquaviva has been a constant offensive threat for the Rebels and will be a huge asset to this team down the stretch.
Not behind Ramos of defensemen Eddie Pyskaty, but just how far Howell goes this postseason will depend upon the sticks of Liero and Acquaviva.
I have a feeling those boys can carry the Rebels pretty far.

Howell Rebels Team Analysis: The Rebels dominated the Falcons in every detail of the game, despite a shaky start. After giving up an early goal, with both teams nodded at one, Howell's superior scoring ability took over, tallying goals from Dave Ramos (3), who netted his first hat trick of the season, Austin Crane (2), Mike Liero (2), and David Madirros, who scored his first varsity goal of the season. Kyle Conrad was excellent again, allowing just three goals, and rebounded well after giving up the tying goal in the first five minutes.
Monroe Falcons Team Analysis: In my preview, I mentioned that Monroe would have to create an offensive spark and display the ability to score goals. Early, they did, matching Howell's first goal within the first five minutes of play. However, it did not last. From that tying goal on, the Rebels took control on the ice and outscored the Falcons 7-2. Monroe deserves credit for skating well with the Rebels, a team with a lot of skill and a highly touted defense.
What's Next: On Saturday, the Howell Rebels will play the biggest game of their season in a matchup against the Freehold Towbship Patriots, a game where the winner will be crowned division champions. This is more than just the division-deciding game. It's the division-deciding game against the Rebels top-rival. It is expected to be filled with emotions and cheers, and it's a game nobody will want to miss.

Monroe Falcons (2-3-1) at Howell Rebels (6-1-3)
Meet the opponent: The Monroe Falcons, coached by Girard Minter, have been nothing but mediocre in 2009-2010. Suffering from an opening night loss vs the Marlboro Mustangs, the Falcons have kept their season--and state playoff hopes alive--by defeating both Red Bank Regional and West Orange. They have lost to Manalapan, a front-running candidate for Shore C, South Brunswick, and Jackson Liberty. Facing the Rebels will be Monroe's biggest test so far, and it's truly a measuring stick for the Falcons.
Monroe Falcons X-Factor: 'Scoring'. I'm not going to single out a specific offensive player for Monroe, but they will need to score goals. They are facing a team that has the ability to score with anyone in the state, as they display four or five forwards and a defensemen who have the ability to score at will. They will need to beat likely goaltender Kyle Conrad, who has been stellar in two starts, filling in for regular netminder Zack Peras who has a concussion, and James Bodeker, who is out with a respiratory infection. If the Falcons find a way to crack the Rebels defense, they will have a shot at defeating one of the most lethal teams in the Shore Conference.
Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Defensemen Eddie Pyskaty'. Pyskaty started out the season hot, becoming the first Howell player to record a hat trick this season against Marlboro. Since then, Rebels players have recorded three (two byMike Liero, one by Billy Acquaviva). Offensivley, Pyskaty is still a focal point of the offense, and still quarterbacks an extremely dangerous powerplay. Still, the man everyone simply refers to as 'Eddie' across Howell will need to jump off his scoring-slide, and will need to have an impact on the scoreboard tomorrow.
Outcome: Howell defeats Monroe 5-3. I see the Faclons showing a lot of heart, and should be adrenanalized in a game against such a high-standing opponent, but in the end, Howell has too much talent for Monroe to truly compete with, and Howell will move closer to qualifying for postseason play.

In a season where many say Howell hasn't played up to expectations, the Rebels are still a first place team--and a program that every opponent comes gunning for.
The reason may not be all about Dave Ramos, as it was in their inaugural season, but he is a bigger part than most people think.
Day after day, game after game, Ramos is hounded by defensemen, something one of the best forwards in the state should be accustomed to. Still, despite the lack of points, Ramos still creates scoring chances, not only for himself, but for other players, his linemates in particular. Because he has drawn several defenders almost everytime he touches the puck, first-liners Mike Liero and Billy Acquaviva have stepped up into a major-goal scoring role. Liero has had back-to-back hatricks, wheras for Acquaviva, scoring has become common place.
Another big part of the Rebels success this season has been their powerplay. Howell runs a very dangerous powerplay, which features five true forwards, although Pyskaty is listed as a defensemen. The set includes Ramos, Eddie Pyskaty, Mike Liero, Billy Acquaviva, and Nick Peras. Peras has been the scorer in this unit, usually deflecting shots in front of the net. This combination is especially dangerous due to the ability of all five men to play any position (ie: the point, slot, down low). Down the stretch, this special teams unit will play a major role in Howell's ability to score, and there are very few teams who have a powerplay that can match the Rebels'.
The goaltending situation has been a little tricky for Howell this season. Last year's regular starter, Zack Peras, started out phenomonally, with a shutout victory against Brick Memorial on opening night. However, the sophomore netminder struggled after that and was benched in favor on James Bodeker, who looked solid in a few outings this season. After earning his starting job back, Peras suffered a concussion, and has been sidelined ever since. Third-string goalie Kyle Conrad has stepped in when Howell has needed him most and has impressed everyone with back-to-back solid starts against St John Vianney and Freehold Boro. Although Conrad may very well eventually challenge Peras for the starting job, I still see this as Peras' job--but I do think some goaltender competition is exactly what this team needs.
Before you say 6-1-3 isn't up to Howell expectations, think about the situation, and how Howell, in mant ways, has played up to--if not over--expectations.

Final Score: Howell Rebels (6-1-3) 8, Freehold Boro Colonials (3-6) 1
Freehold Boro Colonails Team Analysis: As expected, the Colonials never had a real chance in the 8-1 defeat at the hands of Howell. Junior Kevin Collins scored the lone goal for Boro, and despite giving up all eight goals, sophomore goalie Cody Reilly was solid, as he was under immense pressure all night. Without Reilly, this game is easily a mercy, and the netminder deserves credit for standing against one of the best offensive teams in the shore.
Howell Rebels Team Analysis: The Rebels played up-to-Howell expectations, easily disposing of the Colonials Saturday night. Liero netted a hatrick for the second consecutive game, and Billy Acquaviva tallied two more for Howell, who had no trouble scoring. Brandon Hodes, Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty all added a goal of their own, all-the-while backup goalie Kyle Conrad was stellar, allowing just one goal before leaving to a standing ovation late in the third period.
What's Next: On Tuesday, the 6-1-3 Rebels will play host to the Monroe Falcons, 2-3-1. The Ramos-led Rebels will look to improve to a 7-win season, and move closer to clinching the Shore C regular season title.

Freehold Boro Coloniols (3-5) at Howell Rebels (5-1-3)
Previous '09 meeting: In the earlier meeting between the Rebels and the Colonials, Howell scored early and often, and took the game 8-2, in non-dramatic fashion. Althoguh Howell was in the midst of a goaltender crisis, as everyday starter Zack Peras was benched in favor of James Bodeker, it didn't pose as much of a problem for the first-place Rebels. Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty dominanted the offense, accounting for seven on the teams eight points. This was the first and only doiminant win for Howell in 2009.
Freehold Boro X-Factor: 'Forward Tyler Blum'. The team captain was nearly non-existent in a game where the Colonials supplied virtually no offense. If Boro wants any chance in the 2010 debut, this man will have to play a big role and will need to be a huge contributor to the offense. He needs to play well for the Colonials to take a run at Howell.
Howell X-Factor: 'Defense from Matt Morelli and Matt Kotch'. There won't be much stress on either the offense or defense for the Rebels in this game, but I expect Freehold Boro to come out hard for the first five minutes and put some pressure of the Rebels defense. If these two blue-liners stand tall for the first couple of minutes, I see Howell coasting to another blowout win.
Outcome: Howell defeats Freehold Boro 7-2. For the second time this season, I see Howell running away with this one rather easily. Coming off a big win, the adrenaline is still there for the first-place Rebels and they have way too much offensive firepower and talent for the Colonials to hang in there very long.

St John Vianney Lancers Team Analysis: SJV was never really in this game. From the first shot of the game (Howell's Mike Liero's first goal) from the final whistle, the Lancers were outplayed in every fashion of the game. Although the teams GAA (previously 5.17) was reduced (now 5.0), the lack of offense made this game much easier then it should of been for the Rebels, who were playing with some fire.
Howell Rebels team Analysis: Coming off a shocking loss versus Manalapan the previous night, Howell had their work cut out for them, playing a high profile catholic school. The men in the blue and grey answered all the questions that were thrown out from experts who thought Howell's days of playing dominant hockey were over. Mike Liero, a linemant of Ramos, stole the show early, when he scored on the games first shot, less than twelve seconds in. He would go on to add two more for a hat trick, his first of the season, and Nick Peras would score on the lethal Howell powerplay, something that has become commonplace for the Rebels. In net, Kyle Conrad looked very sharp in his first varsity start, as he gave up just one goal, and was very collective, puncing on loose pucks and controlling rebounds. There's no reason for him to not start Saturday, when regular netminder Zack Peras is expected to miss another game with a concussion.
What's Next: On Saturday, January 2nd, the Rebels look to kick off the new year with a bang as they play host to the Freehold Boro Patriots. In the first meeting, Howell took control early in a game that never really seemed close, as Howell defeated the Colonials 8-2. I look for Conrad to start again, seeing there is no initial rush to get Peras back on the ice, nursing a concussion, and I beleive Conrad played well enough to earn himself the start against Freehold Boro.

St John Vianney Lancers (2-4) at Howell Rebels (4-1-3)
How they've fared: The Lancers may not have the greatest record, or anything near what is expected at Saint John Vianney, but you can blame it on the strength of schedule. As a catholic school, SJV have struggled with the likes of CBA and RBC, both perrenial hockey schools. The Lancers have looked impressive in their two wins, defeating Notre Dame Prep 5-3 on opening night, and finsihing off Toms River East 4-2.
The Rebels suffered their first loss of the season last night in a 6-5 loss to the Manalapan Braves. Aside from three ties (including one to Manalapan), Howell had yet to lose and were playing good hockey--but it was clear it wasn't good enough. The Rebels need to get back on the winning track tonight vs a catholic school, a win that would regain the confidence of players and fans.
St John Vianney Lancers X-Factor: 'Goalie Chris Goletz'. The trio of goalies for the Lancers have struggled early, with a combined GAA of 5.17, and against a team like Howell who has players who can flat-out score, this senior netminder needs to be a leader and shut down Howell. If he plays well, St John Vianney has a great chance to take down the Rebels.
Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Goalie Kyle Conrad'. With regular starter Zack Peras still sidelined with a concussion, head coach Bill Daley turns to third string Conrad to step up and carry the Rebels to a much-needed rebound win vs the Lancers today. Conrad has looked extremely impressive in junior varsity games and this is a move many people in Howell have been waiting to see, as many feel Conrad has the ability and talent to challenge Peras for the starting job.
The outcome: Howell defeats St John Vianney 5-1. After a loss vs big-time rival Manalapan, the Rebels, lead by team captain Dave Ramos, come out of the locker room motivated, and take care of the Lancers fairly evenly, reminding everyone why Howell is the team to beat in the shore. Conrad will play very well and will prove that he does have the skill assest to be a #1 goalie.

Howell Rebels team analysis: Despite an almost perfect first period, several major breakdowns on defense cost the previously-undefeated Rebels on this night. Although scoring was not an issue, as the puck was outr in the net from both primary lines, including goals from Liero and Peras on, yet again, a dangerous Howell powerplay. Unfortunatley, the achilles heel for Howell tonight was the play in net, as James Bodeker, who looked strong early, couldn't stay on top of his game and was eventually pulled in favor of Kyle Conrad, who will start tomorrow.
Manalapan Braves team analysis: The Braves proved to everyone on this night--they are the team to challenge Howell. As they outlasted the Rebels, they became the first divisional team to defeat Howell since the teams opened play last year. Manalapan looked very impressive, outside of a disgraceful first period, the Braves outscored the Rebs 6-2, and in the end, they had every type of momentum possible. Incredbile games all around by their top lines, and extreme youth, starting three freshmen. Manalapan needs to feed off this victory, without becoming to egotistic, and they could use this victory as a mere stepping stone of success in 2009-2010.
What's Next: For the Rebels, it won't get too much easier, as they play host to St. John Vianney tomorrow afternoon, in a rebound game they must have, Kyle Conrad will start that game in place of still-injured sophomore Zack Peras.

Previous Meeting: In the earlier meeting in 2009, the Rebels and Braves played an exciting, emotion-filled game the ended in a 3-3 tie. Manalapan was the first team to have Howell doubting themselves, as the Rebels had their backs against the wall with ten minutes remaining in the game, down 3-1. However, with two goals within 45 seconds from senior forwards Nick Peras and Dave Ramos, Howell stormed back and were able to draw Manalapan in what was their third consecutive tie.
Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Goalie'. With Zack Peras out for tonight's game with a concussion, it will be up to back-up James Bodeker to play strong against a team whose going to be coming for them. Bodeker has proved his ability to play in big games (he earned the win playing the final period and a half against Wall in the Shore Conference Championship Game), and has proven he can step in and play good in an unexpected role (Bodeker gave up just one goal filling in for Zack Saturday vs Marlboro). Now, James is going to be the go-to-guy, and will have to continue his great play to keep Howell on top.
Manalapan Braves X-Factor: 'Team Compure'. The Braves proved to everyone they have the talent--and adrenaline level--to play with Howell, and iwll bring their top game again tonight. They had the Rebels beat for this first time by an intra-division opponent since the Freehold Regional High School District created hockey teams two years ago. However, with those ten minutes remaining, Manalapan lost their composure, not only on the ice, but on the bench as well, when head coach Dave Grippo was ejected late in the third period. As a whole, if they stick to their gameplan and don't let emotions take over late in the game, they have a real shot at beating Howell.
The Outcome: Howell defeats Manalapan 3-2. In a game where the goalies take over, it will be Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty who lead the Rebels with a late goal in thed third period to push them over the top, and keep the Rebels undefeated.

12/27--This Week Between the Posts

Early in Saturday night's victory against the Marlboro Mustangs, Howell goalie Zack Peras was nailed in front of the net and left the game with what was listed as a concussion. The sophomore stand-out will not practice this week and is definetley out Tuesday versus Manalapan. Although many might worry about this injury and how the Rebels will struggle without Peras, I think it's time to take advantage of it and use it as experimental time for the other netminders who regularly see time at the end of the bench.
Tuesday, Decmeber 29th vs Manalapan: Start James Bodeker. This sophomore proved to everyone last year in the Shore Conference Championship Game that he can step up in the big game, when he played the final period and a half, earning the win. Bodeker has looked extremely sharp this season with one start in an 8-2 win vs Freehold Boro, and stood his ground against the fiesty Marlboro attack after taking over for the injured Peras. I see Bodeker suprising a lit of people when he plays impressivley Tuesday night.
Wednesday, December 30th vs St John Vianney: I'm going to go out on a limb and say start junior goalie ands first-time player Kyle Conrad. Although Conrad has never touched varsity ice, he has looked extremely impressive in junuor varsity, and the Lancers (2-4) have struggled this season, so it's a great oppurtunity for Conrad to show the coaching staff and fans what he can really do. This is the expected return of Peras, but in this day and age, there's no need to rush a head injury, especially at such a young age.
Still, when Peras does make his return, I expect his starting job to be returned to him, it's something he has deserved and earned.

Marlboro Team Analysis: the Mustangs played very impressivley on the offensive side of the puck, and almost all night they played score-for-score with Howell, but not shot-for-shot. Marlboro proved to a lot of people, as they, for a second straight time, played right alongside with Howell, but also displayed that they are not quite at the level of the Rebels, but are without a doubt taking a step in the right direction. I stressed team defense in the preview, and their defense struggled a little, giving up two powerplay goals to the Rebels and struggled as the puck sat in their end most of the night. Overall: B-
Howell Team Analysis: The Rebels played much better than their original meeting against the Mustangs, but were still far from their top game. Howell scored from both lines, as Liero, Peras, Acquaviva, and Ramos all tallied goals for the Rebs. Extremely impressive powerplay, quarterbacked, as usual, by defensemen Eddie Pyskaty, who played another 35+ minute game. Although head coach Bill Daley may not be too excited with this performance, it's a win nonetheless, and Howell will build off their still-undefeated record at 4-0-3. Overall: B
What's next: The Rebels want get much of a layoff, as they have two days off before they hit the ice to face-off against rival Manalapan, in a game the Rebels must have. Earlier this season, Ramos lead a Howell comeback against the Braves as they ended in a tie at 3. Still, I think the little time off the ice is a good thing, as Howell needs to be able to stay in a winning mentality, and will need to play strong against Manalapan on Tuesday, December 29th.

Marlboro Mustangs (3-3-1) at Howell Rebels (3-0-3)
Previous Meeting: In the first meeting this season, the Rebels and Mustangs took part in an exciting, fast paced, back and forth game that ended in a 6-6 tie, with Marlboro scoring the game-tying goal with just 15.3 seconds left. That was also the game where Howell's junior defensemen Eddie Pyskaty took off, compiling four points, and hat trick, and a game where he had three of those four points in the first period alone. Still, the resilliency from the Mustangs was very impressive, as they continuously clawed their way into the game, and ended up with that late game-tying goal.
Marlboro Mustangs X-Factor: 'Team Defense'. In the first meeting, the Mustangs defense did a tremendous job shutting down the top playmaker for Howell, senior captain Dave Ramos. However, they forgot about Pyskaty, who torched Marlboro for the four points afore mentioned. The Mustangs' defense will have to be sharp again, and also account for Pyskaty if they want to have a fighting chance and prove the first-game tie was not a fluke, and they are indeed talented enough to compete with the high-flying Rebels.
Howell Rebels X-Factor: 'Offensive play of Dave Ramos'. In the first meeting, Ramos was shut down by this fiesty Marlboro defense. However, the 100-point-club-member is due for a breakout game, and is tired of seeing double and triple teams. However, the Mustangs will look to take care of Pyskaty, leaving an opening for Ramos to have that breakout game he has been waiting for.
Outcome: Howell defeats Marlboro 7-3 (Yes, I did predict the score again). As the season progresses on, both teams are starting to find their identity, and for Howell, the defense, headed by Pyskaty and Morelli, is shaping out to be much better than last year's--a bad sign for the Mustangs. I look for Ramos and Pyskaty to lead an offensive show for the estimated 300 Howell fans in attendance, and in the end, are too talented for a Marlboro team who is finally starting to come together.

As the Howell Rebels (3-0-3) defeated the Freehold Township Patriots (4-2) 2-1 Tuesday night, it was evident early that this would not be a normal divisional game for these two schools. On the night when the 'Shore Conference Champions' banner was unveiled, Billy Acquaviva would score both Howell goals, as the still undefeated Rebels took out township in a game filled with pride and emotion.
Let's take a closer look at how the Rebels fared...
First Forward Line: As expected, team captain Dave Ramos was hounded by Township defensemen all night and Mike Liero and Austin Crane stepped up big. I was especially impressed by Crane's ability to create plenty of quality scoring chances, and I feel as if this was a huge step in the right direction for the talented freshman, and he has officially gained the trust of the fans, coaches, and players.
Second Forward Line: Head Coach Bill Daley really mixed this line up well, and it paid off huge dividends for him. This line easily had the biggest impact on the game Tuesday night. Obviously, Acquaviva was the stand-out, netting both Rebels' goals, and earned player of the game--but it wasn't all him. I was extremely impressed with junior Brandon Hodes, and his superb play all night on one of the best players in the shore-#17 John Talamo of Freehold Township.
First Defensive Line: Eddie Pyskaty, who leads the Rebels in goals with 7, did an icredible job avoiding defenders and becoming an offensive prescense from the blue line while being shadowed all night. Still, the junior captain played over 35 minutes and quarterbacked a very dangerous powerplay. Very strong game from Matt Schiek, who stepped up physically and logged more minutes than he is genrally accustomed to, all during a smooth transition to the number 20.
Second Defensive Line: The duo of Matt Kotch and Matt Morelli continue to impress me. Despite undersized, they perform incredibly in front of Zack Peras, and Morelli, a converted defensemen, shows a natural talent handling the puck and attacking the offensive zone, something the Rebels will need down the stretch.
Goalie: In my preview, I stated the goalie of the Rebels would play a major role-and that, Peras did. The second year standout was nearly perfect, and extremely compsed, as he turned away nearly every shot, compiling 23 saves. Needless to say, Peras earned his starting job back, and won't be benched again anytime soon.

Final Score: Howell Rebels 2, Freehold Township 1
Howell Team Analysis: Although they did not play up to the rising expectations of Howell Hockey, the Rebels walked out of Gold Coast Arena with a win. A well-played game for the most part, the biggest problem for howell was the inability to finish quality chances, and put the puck in the net. Both the primary and secondary lines played extremely solid, and goalie Zack Peras was dominant and stood his ground for almost the entire game.
Freehold Township Team Analysis: As stated in the preview, the team composure of the Patriots would play a major role in the outcome--and it did. Freehold Township was extremely impressive with their composure and collective attitude on the ice, but in the end, Howell's offensive firepower was simply too much for Townships defense, and a couple of mistakes in their defensive zone cost the Pats in this rivalry game.
The Final Tally: On a night when Howell unveiled their 'Shore Conference Champions' banner, it was inevitible that the Rebels would come away victorious. Despite a strong showing from the Patriots, Ramos and the Rebels were just too much as Howell (3-0-3) defeated Freehold Township (4-2) 2-1.
Player of the Game: Senior forward Billy Acquaviva (Howell). With Ramos and Pyskaty being double-teamated virtually everytime they touched the puck, The Rebels turned to the Acquaviva to step up offensivley, a role the senior is more than willing to take. The quick-skating left winger netted both goals for Howell, leading the Rebels to a big intra-division win against a top rival, and becoming this games, player of the game.

Freehold Township (4-1) at Howell (2-0-3)
How they've fared:
The Patriots have looked strong early in the season, starting out 4-0 with wins against Steinart 8-4, Kinnelon 2-1, Freehold Boro 5-1, and Marlboro 4-2. Despite a recent loss against Ocean, Freehold Township has lived up to expectations and are extremely confident heading into the game against rival Howell.
The Rebels, despite some early season ties, still have not suffered a loss as their record stands at 2-0-3. Coming off a blowout 8-2 win against Freehold Boro, the Rebels look to continue their winning ways as they take on the Patriots on MSG Varsity.
Howell X-Factor: 'Goalie' (whoever that may be). In the 8-2 win against the Colonials, the natural backup James Bodeker played outstanding, so in my mind, the x-factor will be whoever plays between the posts. If it's usual starter Zack Peras, he needs to once again solidify his name as the best goalie, not only on the team, but in the shore, as he was last year. If Bodeker is sent into the crease, I'll look for him to be dominant again and make a serious run at the everyday starting position.
Freehold Township X-Factor: 'Composure'. Last season, the Rebels mercied the Patriots in both games, but for Township, there's no better time to outlaw the Rebels and take the place atop Shore 'C'. With Howell strugglnig to find a rythym, and a lack of a solid goaltender, Freehold Township needs to be patient and composed throughout the game. They will get their chances, but they will need to let the game come to them. If they don't, they have no shot.
Outcome: Howell defeats Freehold Township 7-3: The Rebels play extremely well with Peras in the net, but can't mercy the Patriots as they did last season. Despite Howell's somewhat early struggles, I just see them having way too much talent in the end to allow Township to have any real chance in this game.

12/18--Just another game

On Tuesday, the Howell Rebels and Freehold Township Patriots will face-off at 5:00 P.M. However, for the first time in history, the team will be playing on regional television, 'MSG Varisty'.
Despite the hype and excitement of playing on live television, I will prove to you, the audience, why this isn't the biggest hockey game in the history of Howell.
Although, yes, I do think playing on live T.V., it is a tremendous thing for Howell, you must remember, outside of the school and Howell township, there are not true Howell Rebels fans, so anyone who is that interested in the team would be attending the game.
What there are, however, are future opponents of Howell who could use the televsion broadcast as an issue way of scouting, as opposed to making the trip to the arena and dealing with the famously obnoxious Howell crowd. In my mind, one reason Howell is so dominant is because several teams don't know about them. After all, they are just a second-year school and rarely gain publicity from websites and/or newspapers.
Also, I do understand that good teams will get oppurtunities to play on television--and I don't think that's a bad thing at all.
Heck, I'm extremely proud at how hard this team has worked to put themselves in a position to be put on T.V., it's something they truly deserve.
Still, the hype of this game connot get into the Rebels players' heads. For the most part, I think they will be emotionally and mentally prepared for a gme like this, due in large part to coach Bill Daley, but an even bigger role is in the hands of the man with the captain's "C" embrodied across his chest.
If Ramos displays the attitude that this game is like no other, Howell will follow in his footsteps and be just fine. And that right there is the most important thing to remember: it's just another game.
But in the end, yes, this is something that I, and everyone else attending the game on Tuesday, December 22nd, will remember. And as long as the Rebels, treat it as a normally scheduled game, it will be a very special night.
Besides, what's better than embaressing our big-time rivals on T.V for the entire tri-state area to see?

12/17--Yeah, he's that good

As #11 Dave Ramos warms up before every Howell Hockey game, the captain creates a buzz, a sense of excitement in the crowd. He may very well be the most talented hockey player in the state, but when a crazed student-fan jumps on his chair to scream his name, a wide smile is seen through the double-caged helmet of Ramos, as he gives a humble head nod to the crowd. That seperates Ramos from every other star in high school athletics.
As a studnet-journalist, my top priority is covering Howell High School sports. Without a doubt, Hockey is my favorite to write about. Still, it is not the only sport I cover. With football, the hardest part is to get quotes from the starting players. This fall, I was constantly turned away because the players thought they were too good to answer questions. Hockey, lead by Ramos, is entirely different.
As I interview Ramos, the fact that he pretends to care and act nervous is the best thing. As a writer, interviewing peers, some of whom I used to play sports with, can be somewhat mortifying. Ramos makes it fun an enjoyable everytime. After most games, Ramos has to recieve roughly 50 text messages from fans. He always makes it a point to return mine, regardless of how he played or the outcome--that's just the kind of man he is...
...As Ramos handles the puck along his defensive blue line, every person in the Howell Rebels student section rises, along with the buzz--everyone knows something exciting is in the future. Regardless of how that play ends-whether it be a goal or Ramos losing posession of the puck-no one blames Dave. Because of what he has done for this hockey program in a little over a year, Ramos has entered a state where he 'can do no wrong'. In some natures, that can be a good thing, and other's, a bad.
Opposing teams and fans, along with some professional bloggers feel Howell's program has too much trust in Ramos and feels that if he went down, so would the team.
Here's the thing-Dave Ramos doesn't go down.
Now, I'm not here to fool my audience. I am a biased writer. I'm a senior at Howell High School, and I sit at the same lunch table as Ramos, so yes, I do interact with him on a daily basis.
Still, on a journalists note, to speak out against the opposers of Ramos in a 'do no worng' atmosphere, Dave Ramos is completely deserving of that type of title.
Not only does he have the talent, as proven last season with his 97 points, but he has the attitude as well. After the 1-0 victory against Brick Memorial, Ramos told me in an interview that he felt as if he let the team and fans down by not scoring a goal.
That type of attitude is the reason why everyone praises Ramos, and the reason in my mind, why he will be the greatest person I ever write about.
For those who interact with him as I do, you will realize Dave Ramos is a man worth modeling after, on, and off, the ice.

12/16--A league of their own

For the FRHSD (Freehold Regional High School District), hockey is a new thing. Many of the six teams are still trying to find their image and style. There biggest games are against each other, where sloppy play and odd-man rushes are a constant. That is, unless you are a part of the Howell Rebels.In their first season, Howell lost a total of four games, including a state playoff loss at Brick Memorial.The Rebels blew out district opponents on a daily basis, much like yesterday's game (Howell defeated Freehold Boro 8-2).They are expected to compete with the likes of experienced, talented schools, such as Brick Memorial, whom the Rebels defeated 1-0 on opening night, and private schools like Monsignor Donovan, who the Rebels outplayed in a 3-3 tie earlier in the season.Then, one will ask, how is it fair for a second-year team to play against teams who recruit players and teams who have been playing together for several years?Well, for the Rebels and their fans, this isn't just a second-year team. Hockey has become a major part of the school quickly. Every gameday, the players are seen with a shirt and tie, usually a gray "Howell Hockey" sweatshirt, and a buzz of excitement surrounds them.On those gamedays, when student-fans talk, the question is never "Are you going to the game?", it's always, "What time are you going to the game?" That, in itself, is a vital part of what sepreates Howell from your traditonal new high school hockey team. Support is key.There's constantly a sense of excitement when a big-name website or newspaper starts to recognize the team and players for playing on such a high level.Oh yeah, and there's two pretty significant numbers that represent the expectations of Howell Hockey.ONE and SEVEN.Well, those numbers, within themselves, are what makes Howell hockey today, and what it has ever been.Number 11 Dave Ramos and number 77 Eddie Pyskaty. Together, they make Howell hockey what it is. They are involved in virtually every point (19 of 21 to be exact), pick the team up when their down (Ramos scoring the game-tying goal against Manalapan), having the ability and mental toughness to play, literally, and entire game (Pyskaty didn't miss a shift against Monsignor Donovan), and there may not be a better duo to lead any team in the shore conference.On top of their ability to play hockey, Ramos and Pyskaty are two of the best and most likable people in the school, a major reason why many take the time to support them and talk to them about hockey. In the past two years, I've conducted several interviews with the two of them for several articles, and have become extremely close with both of them, and one thing that I have noticed was they are never too busy or too impotant to talk to you, very unlike other big-headed high school athletes. They also always look like they want to talk to you. I don't think there's ever been an interview where I didn't spend the entire time laughing with them, and that's something I will remember forever, regardless of how far I ever go in sportswriting.With the skill presented in the blue and gray, the rising expectations of this hockey team are not something to resent, but instead, something to take serious pride in.

12/15--The Formula

Last season, the Howell Rebels shocked everyone with 19 wins, in just their first year as a hockey team. For every team, there is always a degree of predictability--except for the good teams. Howell plays ten players nightly (6 forwards, 4 defensemen). Here are there roles, and the formula to their success:
Dave Ramos (captain): This hockey team has to run through Ramos. Registering 97 points last season, Dave will draw two or three defenders every game, as he is widely considered the best forward in the state.
Mike Liero: In his second season playing alongside Ramos, Liero needs to adapt to Ramos' doubleteams. Argubaly one of the best stick-handlers on the team, Liero's size and skill make him a tremendous asset to Howell's first line.
Austin Crane: It's never easy for a freshman to jump onto the top line of any high school team, but particularly one with the expectations of Howell. Still, Crane has adjusted nicely, registering his first carrer goal against Monsignor Donovan two weeks ago. Look for him to be key down the stretch, as many teams that are unaware of his skill will leave him open.
Nick Peras: Peras, who focuses mostly on hitting, will be calleed upon heavily in 2009-2010. As one of the captains, he needs to be a leader on and off the ice, a role that fits his personality perfectly. He will also play a major role in Howell's scoring in this, his senior season. With plenty of experience, and a heavy shot, Peras displays the talent that few enforcers have. If he gets the ice time that he's expected to, he could be a huge contributor on the scoreboard this year.
Brandon Hodes: Probably will be the most overlooked player on Howell. an extraordinary penalty killer, no one should be suprised when he turns on his offensive game later in the season. Just a junior, he has the time to improve and the perfect attitude to be the team captain next season.
Billy Acquaviva: This is a forward that opponents are finally zoning in on. With tremendous speed, stick-handling ability and a rock-hard shot, Acquaviva has the ability to be a serious playmaker on any team in the shore. Look for him to be the leader on the second line.
Eddie Pyskaty: Without a doubt, Pyskaty is the most important player to Howell. With a defensemen out, Pyskaty will play well over 40 minutes a night, and with Ramos getting double-teamed the offense must run through Pyskaty. The Howell Rebels will go as far as he takes them.
Matt Schiek: With the loss of defensemen Kevin Gaskill, Sciek has to step up as the most physical defender for the Rebels. Playing alongside Pyskaty, ice time won't be an issue and he will be set up to be a prominent goal scorer.
Matt Kotch: Although undersized, Kotch displays terrific skills on defense, and in his second year starting, he needs to be the leader playing alongside Matt Morelli and provide an offensive spark from the point.
Matt Morelli: Starting for the first time, Morelli has to provide strong defense in front of goaltender Zack Peras. With a lot of skill handling the puck, Morelli has to be an offensive weapon from the blue line.
Zack Peras: As a sophomore, starting for the second consecutive year, Peras will have to perfect the butterfly, and remain as confident as he was last year. Peras showed that ability, as he was 23/23 in a shutout win on opening night against Brick Memorial on opening night.
With this core of players, and if this formula is put to use, it will all equal one thing: a state championship.

12/14--Tie-ing down on early season hockey

For any Howell fan, young or old, the vision of centerman Nick Peras jumping into the glass in front of the student section was a quick reminder of what Howell Hockey means to the school and the town.
Thinking back, it was just a year ago that a Manalapan player seriously injured Peras, firing a puck at him as he laid helplessly on the ice.- Hide quoted text -
Qucikly after Peras celebration (45 seconds to be exact), Rebels captain and fan favorite Dave Ramos scored his second goal, tying the game at three, and sending the Howell crowd into a frenzy and electryifying the building.Eventually the teams would end in a 3-3 tie.TIE.What really does that mean?For Howell, it is the final result for the third consecutive game, as their current record stands at 1-0-3.Still, in this game, a tie is a great thing.Many compare a tie to 'kissing your sister', implying that it's a road that no team ever wabnts to cross -- and to a point, that is true.In the Rebels first two ties, they lost late leads against Monsignor Donovan and Marlboro, both games where they outplayed their opponent and should have won.And, true, in this Manalapan game they did outplay the Braves, out-shooting them on a nearly 3-to-1 ratio.However, in the facts of the game, with 12 minutes remaining, Howell did indeed find themselves in a 2-goal hole.Due to resilliency, and a whole lot of talent on the stick of a Mr. Dave Ramos, Howell clawed thweir way back in it to end in a tie for the third straight time.If I'm anyone affiliated with Howell, I do not look at this tie as a bad thing.In fact, it's the opposite.Despite a somewhat lifeless crowd, what happened Saturday night is a crude reminder that really anything can happen and nothing is given to any team, regardless of who wears a captain's 'C' on their jersey and regardless of last year's record.There are obvious notes from this matchup:Yes, Howell is a more talented team.Yes, Howell had a amuch larger crowd and fan base.Yes, Howell outnumbered the shots category, racking up 39.And yes, Howell is a more experienced team with much better chemistry.Still, Howell should look at this tie as a great thing, looking at how to goalis within 45 seconds electrifyed themselves and their fans.What has happened thus far this season is proof that nothing will come easy for the Ramos-led Rebels in 2009-2010.Winning teams are expected to rebound and use criticism as motivation.What this winning team needs to do it use ties like this as motivation.What the Howell Rebels needed, and got from the Braves --was a stern look in the mirror and a reminder, nothing comes easy.
