Game Summary: TOMS RIVER -- The top-seeded Toms River Indians proved to everyone why they deserved that seed in the matter of a fifteen-minute period.
In the second period of Wednesday's semi-final game in the Dowd Cup against the fourth-seeded Howell Rebels, the Indians scored six times, more than enough insurance in their 7-2 win. From the drop of the puck, Toms River South dominated the pace of play--not allowing the depleted Rebels to get any form of offense going, as they shut down Dave Ramos and Eddie Pyskaty.
What went wrong: The Howell Rebels can attempt to sit here and blame the beat-down they accepted on Wednesday night on the injuries to Matt Kotch, Mike Liero and Michael Kochenash--but it will be to avail. Everything on this night went wrong for the defending Dowd Cup champions. From the opening face-off to the final whistle, the Indians out-hustled the Rebels to every puck, out-hit the Rebels in every opportunity and flat-out out-played Howell all night. The Rebels couldn't get any offense going and were unable to clear the zone on the defensive end. All-in-all, this game is, without a doubt, the worst night Howell hockey has ever witnessed.

ReplyDeleteare you kidding me? you can't say they "shut down dave ramos" im pretty sure he was the ONLY one who scored both goals. obviously he wasn't "shut down" if he scored. Maybe if there was some defense going he wouldn't have to hold the team up by himself.
I noticed Brandon Hodes coming out firing in the first period. But the team as a whole looked sluggish. After the first goal, we played a great second half of the first period. Then the breakdown begin by all players. Individual efforts every once and a while won't get anything done.
ReplyDeleteThough Dave may have scored both goals, I am sure that he will agree that it is not fair to say he was the only one who came out to play. Injuries or not: Win as a team, Lose as a team. Let's put this behind us and focus on Monday to come back with a fire that no team has ever seen before. Being friends with the players, I know they do not want to forget about this came, but use it to help fuel them.
i completly agree with you bobby but if they play as a team whether its a win or loss, brian shouldn't have singled out Dave or Eddie by saying they "shut him down" because that isn't true. i'm pretty sure that dave would also say he wasn't whatever Brian calls "shut down"
ReplyDeleteI'm not singling out Dave or Eddie. They both were shadowed..it's not a knock on them at all. It's a known fact that they are the scorers on this team, and two goals at times when they were down by 5 and 6 doesn't help. Neither of them consistently had posession of the puck or had a good amount of pressure at all. so yes, they did get shutdown

ReplyDeleteok, if you've been to every game like I have you would know how Ramos and Eddie have literally taken over games in the flash of an eye. Ask any Howell fan, ask Daley himself who said I 'hit the nail on the head' in my blog. Those two players were shut down, two goals from a team who averages nearly 6 is bad.

i think the problem is pretty simple. the offense is often out of position in the offensive zone leaving the person with the puck no one to give it to for a quality chance. instead we saw a lot of weak shots from the half boards that, if they were even on net, were handled with ease.
ReplyDeletein my opinion, this team has got to drive the net or to the net at least get some bodies in front. also, when breaking the zone they seem to wait a little longer than they should. how many times have we seen dave or eddie do a great job rushing the puck up, yet nobody is there for them to pass to so they have to try and split both D or take a from farther out?
uhm, im pretty sure i've been to every game, i know how they play and they can't do it alone. they need a team, so it wasn't just them shut down.

ReplyDeleteEvery true Howell fan will back my word on the fact that Dave and Eddie have taken a game over by themselves..it's happened before and it was those two who, with little help, stormed back against TRS on January 14th. Dave set up billys sh goal, eddie set up kochenash's game tying goal..dave and eddie scored the last 2. dave blocked the final shot.

ReplyDeleteim not blaming the loss on them. you don't understand the way I write the blog. I was giving a summary -- people want to read about the two people who will likely be playing juniors. In a playoff game, they were shut down as prolific scorers. No one else is a great scorer on this team. Like I said, everyone will back my word with that.

ok hockey fanatic listen up..clearly brian knows what he is talking about with all his success in the field of writing and after all the years he has been watching sports..and from what i heard of the game dave didnt really touch the puck to much, so yes he did have both goals but clearly he did not dominate and was not able to get everyone else involved like he usually does. and eddie didnt score so he was a non factor. not trying to bash on dave and eddie cause they are tremendous hockey players but they clearly did not pose a threat in the game

woah woah woah.I assume you don't know that I also blog about the New Jersey Devils and I'm a paid journalist for a newspaper...and I'm a senior in high school. Don't say I'm not successful, that's one way to rile up the Howell fans. And I am the biggest fan we have. You act like I don't like Dave or Eddie -- completely unture. and Dave and Eddie love my blogs so you gotta calm down. None of us have anything against them, but my job is to write what happened.

I really can't even stand these blogs anymore, I apologize. You make it seem like we lost because of two players being "shutdown". The truth of the matter is, the whole team did not have a good game, and being "shutdown" is no excuse for that kind of loss. Dave and Eddie are great players, yes, but they'll not the entire team. We've played much better, and I'm sure at times we may have played worse as well, but it's in the past and all we can do is hope for a great game Monday.

You are starting to grow a list of people who don't. Instead of supporting your classmates, you seem to be negative upon them a few times as of blog 1/31/10. If you are embarrassed by what Howell hockey has to give, maybe you should stop coming and being so negative. In good times or bad and I admit there have been alot of bad, classmates should still be supported.

ReplyDeletedon't call anyone an idiot on here. yes brian was negative with his writing because they didn't play the greatest game ever. but if he was a true fan he would still speak positive about his friends/players because they aren't going to win every single game. They worked hard and i believe dave and eddie worked hard as well. it was clear that he singled them out which wasn't right. they play as a team, win as a team, and loose as a team, it was a team effort. brian needs to think twice and realize that some of the howell hockey players do no appreciate the negativity.
ReplyDeletethere was nothing positive to speak about the performance! losing 7-2 isnt exactly great and he never said that dave and eddie didnt play hard, he said they were shut down which clearly was true considering the final score and he "singled them out" because they are the two best players on the team and clearly when they dont deliver an outstanding performance like they do 95% of the time the team doesnt do as good..and too bad if howell hockey players dont like brians writing, its called freedom of speech and brian can say whatever he wants

HockeyFanatic3. Stop. I don't mean to bring this back up, but Brian speaks the truth. He, in no way, bashes the team. They know how they did, and I think they would agree. He singles Dave and Eddie out because, as said in Remember the Titans, "Attitude reflects leadership". Now, though they may not have been shut down (Ramos scoring both the goals), they did not play up to usual performance level. Whenever Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, or any other star has a bad night (just like Dave or Eddie rarely have), the loss is not put on their shoulders, but they are a factor. I love those guys, but I didn't see the fire I usually see twice or three times a week from them.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am a huge fan. Probably one of the biggest out there. You'll recognize that I am there every game cheering them on. I was there an hour early to the game, and i left as the buzzer rang. I stood there with head in hands, not because I turned on my team, but I wasn't exactly proud of the performance. Does this make me a bad fan? No, it makes me human. When I read Brian's blogs, I think of them as constructive criticism. His "bashing on the players" isn't bashing at all. It's a challenge for them to prove him wrong. When they read this and see that he said they were out-hustled, I know for a fact they are coming out firing on Monday to show everyone why they are a great team. Brian doesn't turn on the Howell Rebels, he puts them up to the challenge.
Plus, as a journalist, you are supposed to tell the game as it is. Anyone in that arena would have agreed with what Brian said. In a game where TR South ruled the ice, it wouldn't have made sense to add that the Rebels worked hard all game. He tells it how it is.
Brian, keep writing. I know of more people that love your writing rather than hate it. Don't ignore these people though. Just as you challenge these players to do better, these critiques of your writing should be your challenge. I know you'll show them.
